In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 940MX 2GB are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT SLI.

The GeForce 940MX 2GB was released over three years more recently than the 9800M GT, and so the GeForce 940MX 2GB is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the 9800M GT when running the latest games.

The GeForce 940MX 2GB has 1024 MB more video memory than the 9800M GT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, the overall memory performance is about the same.

The 9800M GT has 86.4 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce 940MX 2GB, which means that the memory performance of the 9800M GT is much better than the GeForce 940MX 2GB.

The GeForce 940MX 2GB has 384 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 9800M GT SLI has 192. However, the actual shader performance of the GeForce 940MX 2GB is 644 and the actual shader performance of the 9800M GT is 96. The GeForce 940MX 2GB having 548 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the 9800M GT performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The GeForce 940MX 2GB transistor size technology is 37 nm (nanometers) smaller than the 9800M GT. This means that the GeForce 940MX 2GB is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the 9800M GT.

The GeForce 940MX 2GB requires 25 Watts to run and the GeForce 9800M GT SLI requires 130 Watts. The 9800M GT requires 105 Watts more than the GeForce 940MX 2GB to run. The difference is significant enough that the 9800M GT may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GeForce 940MX 2GB.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce 940MX 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the Maxwell Architecture.

Architecture
GeForce 940MX 2GB Features a GPU Codenamed GM108-N16S-GTR which is a First Gen Maxwell GPU and is identical to the GM108-N16S-GT-S used on GeForce 940M but with the addition of GDDR5 Support.
GM108-N16S-GTR has 3 Compute Units Unlocked and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs.

GPU
The Central Unit is Clocked at 1122Hz and goes up to 1242MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory: Speed
The GPU is equipped with DDR3 and Accesses the Frame Buffer through a 64-bit Memory Interface. The Memory Clock Operates at 1001MHz.

Memory: Frame Buffer
The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 2GB.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 25W, it is suited for small and medium sized laptops.

Performance
Equipped with DDR3, GeForce GT 940MX is only slightly faster than GeForce GT 940M.

System Suggestions
GeForce 940MX 2GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1366x768. We Recommend a Middle-Class Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
GeForce 9800M GT SLI is a solution of two GeForce 9800M GT put together using NVIDIA'S SLI technology.
Check the page of GeForce 9800M GT to know more about its chip.
As usual, SLI relies a lot on proper driver support and may suffer from micro-stuttering in lower frame rates (below 30). Benchmarks indicate the performance is overall, up to X% better than a single GeForce 9800M GT performing by itself but at times (depending whether or not the 3D game supports SLI or in the graphics driver) it performed worse than a single GeForce 9800M GT.
A few demanding games will run at the highest settings with fluent frame rates (30+) but overall most games will require reduced settings to be played optimally.
