In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI are massively better than the AMD Radeon HD 8850M.
The GTX 965M has a 299 MHz higher core clock speed and 88 more Texture Mapping Units than the Radeon HD 8850M. This results in the GTX 965M providing 93.3 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The GTX 965M has a 299 MHz higher core clock speed and 48 more Render Output Units than the Radeon HD 8850M. This results in the GTX 965M providing 49.1 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The GTX 965M was released over a year more recently than the Radeon HD 8850M, and so the GTX 965M is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the Radeon HD 8850M.
The GTX 965M has 2048 MB more video memory than the Radeon HD 8850M, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 965M also has superior memory performance overall.
The GTX 965M has 128 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 8850M, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 965M is massively better than the Radeon HD 8850M.
The GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI has 2048 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8850M has 640. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 965M is 2627 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 8850M is 496. The GTX 965M having 2131 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 965M delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Radeon HD 8850M.
The GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI requires 100 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8850M requires 45 Watts. The GTX 965M requires 55 Watts more than the Radeon HD 8850M to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 965M may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Radeon HD 8850M.

Mini Review | Overview GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI is a solution of two GeForce GTX 965M 4GB put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology. Architecture The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient. GPU It consists of 2 GPUs Codenamed GM204-N16E-GS which, together, offer 2048 Shader Processing Units, 128 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The central unit runs at 924MHz and goes up to 950MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory Each GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1253MHz. Power Consumption Power Consumption is around 100W. Performance Gaming benchmarks prove that at 2560x1440, the best suited resolution, GeForce GTX 965M 4GB SLI is around 10% faster than a Single GeForce GTX 980M. System Suggestions We recommend a High-End Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance. | Overview Radeon HD 8850M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the GCN Architecture. Architecture The GCN 1.1 Release adds support for AMD's TrueAudio Technology which does calculations of audio effects "better" than the CPU and further improves the Powertune Technology. GPU It equips a GPU codenamed Venus PRO which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Operates at 625MHz and goes up to 775MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1000MHz. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 45W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops. Performance Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above NVIDIA's GeForce GT 750M. System Suggestions We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 8850M. |
