In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 840M 2GB are massively better than the Nvidia GeForce 705M 1GB.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 254 MHz higher core clock speed and 16 more Texture Mapping Units than the GeForce 705M 1GB. This results in the GeForce 840M 2GB providing 18.5 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 254 MHz higher core clock speed and 4 more Render Output Units than the GeForce 705M 1GB. This results in the GeForce 840M 2GB providing 5.1 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GeForce 840M 2GB was released less than a year after the GeForce 705M 1GB, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has 1024 MB more video memory than the GeForce 705M 1GB, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GeForce 840M 2GB also has superior memory performance overall.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has 1.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce 705M 1GB, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce 840M 2GB is marginally better than the GeForce 705M 1GB.

The GeForce 705M 1GB has 48 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 840M 2GB has 384. However, the actual shader performance of the GeForce 705M 1GB is 74 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 840M 2GB is 583. The GeForce 840M 2GB having 509 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GeForce 840M 2GB delivers a noticeably smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce 705M 1GB.

The GeForce 840M 2GB transistor size technology is 12 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GeForce 705M 1GB. This means that the GeForce 840M 2GB is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GeForce 705M 1GB.

The GeForce 705M 1GB requires 15 Watts to run and the GeForce 840M 2GB requires 33 Watts. The GeForce 840M 2GB requires 18 Watts more than the GeForce 705M 1GB to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GeForce 840M 2GB to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GeForce 705M 1GB.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce 705M is a entry-level Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Fermi Architecture.

GeForce 705M equips a GPU Codenamed GF119-B1 which is a Second Generation Fermi GPU.
Still built on 40nm Technology, it has 1 Stream Multiprocessor activated and thus offers 48 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs.

The Speed of the Central Unit Varies from Laptop to Laptop. Usually, it is clocked at up to 775MHz.

Memory: Speed
The GPU is equipped with DDR3 and Accesses the Frame Buffer through a 64-bit Memory Interface. The Memory Clock Operates at 900MHz.

Memory: Frame Buffer
The GPU can fill up a Memory Pool of up to 1GB.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 15W, it is suited for small laptops.

GeForce 705M is essentially a renamed GeForce 610M.
Therefore, AMD's and Intel's Recent Powerful Integrated Graphics are still more powerful.

System Suggestions
GeForce 705M is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1366x768. We recommend a Middle-Class Processor and 4GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
GeForce 840M 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

The Maxwell architecture features many improvements and among them is the extremely large L2 Cache which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

It equips a GPU codenamed GM108 which has 3 SM activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1029MHz and goes up to 1124MHz, in Turbo Mode.

The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The Frame Buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1001MHz.

DirectX 11.2 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 33W, it will only be equipped in average sized notebooks.

Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 20% faster than the older GeForce GT 740M. Therefore, it should match GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce 840M 2GB.
