In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) are massively better than the AMD Radeon 9800 XT.

The HD 8740 has a 388 MHz higher core clock speed and 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the Radeon 9800 XT. This results in the HD 8740 providing 22.3 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since the HD 8740 supports up to DirectX 12.0.

The HD 8740 has a 388 MHz higher core clock speed and 8 more Render Output Units than the Radeon 9800 XT. This results in the HD 8740 providing 9.5 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 8740 was released over three years more recently than the Radeon 9800 XT, and so the HD 8740 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Radeon 9800 XT when running the latest games.

The HD 8740 has 1792 MB more video memory than the Radeon 9800 XT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 8740 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 8740 has 48.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon 9800 XT, which means that the memory performance of the HD 8740 is noticeably better than the Radeon 9800 XT.

The Radeon 9800 XT has 8 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) has 512. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon 9800 XT is 2 and the actual shader performance of the HD 8740 is 348. The HD 8740 having 346 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 8740 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Radeon 9800 XT.

The HD 8740 transistor size technology is 122 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Radeon 9800 XT. This means that the HD 8740 is expected to run massively cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Radeon 9800 XT.

The Radeon 9800 XT requires 60 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the Radeon 9800 XT and a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740. The Radeon 9800 XT requires 5 Watts more than the HD 8740 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the Radeon 9800 XT to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the HD 8740.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewThe Radeon R300 (introduced August 2002) is the third generation of Radeon graphics chips from ATI Technologies. The line features 3D acceleration based upon Direct3D 9.0 and OpenGL 2.0, a major improvement in features and performance compared to the preceding Radeon R200 design. R300 was the first fully Direct3D 9-capable consumer graphics chip. The processors also include 2D GUI acceleration, video acceleration, and multiple display outputs. R300 refers to the development codename of the initially released GPU of the generation. R300 and its derivatives would form the basis for ATI's consumer and professional product lines for over 3 years.
The integrated graphics processor based upon R300 is called Xpress 200.
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
