In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GT 740 v3 MSI 2GB Edition are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM).

The GT 740 has a 206 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the HD 8740. This results in the GT 740 providing 6.6 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GT 740 has a 206 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 8740 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the GT 740 providing 3.3 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GT 740 was released over a year more recently than the HD 8740, and so the GT 740 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD 8740.

The GeForce GT 740 v3 MSI 2GB Edition and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The GT 740 has 8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 8740, which means that the memory performance of the GT 740 is marginally better than the HD 8740.

The GeForce GT 740 v3 MSI 2GB Edition has 384 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) has 512. However, the actual shader performance of the GT 740 is 386 and the actual shader performance of the HD 8740 is 348. The GT 740 having 38 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GT 740 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 8740.

The GeForce GT 740 v3 MSI 2GB Edition requires 64 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the GT 740 and a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740. The GT 740 requires 9 Watts more than the HD 8740 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GT 740 to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the HD 8740.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce GT 740 v3 MSI 2GB Edition is a Special Edition of NVIDIA's Middle-Class GeForce GT 740 v3, created by MSI.

Overclock: Central Unit
None.

Overclock: Memory Clock
None.

Frame Buffer
The Frame Buffer was doubled to 2GB. This would prove useful under most circumstances because most modern 3D Games require at least 2GB of Memory to run Optimally.
However, because the GPU itself is too weak to work under other circumstances in which 2GB of Memory are needed - such as 1080p Gaming, a Larger Frame Buffer is mostly a Gimmick.

Cooling Solution
Untouched.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate no performance over the reference GeForce GT 740 v3.
Overview
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Performance
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
