In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Intel Iris Graphics 540 Mobile are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT SLI.

The Graphics 540 was released over three years more recently than the 9800M GT, and so the Graphics 540 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the 9800M GT when running the latest games.

The 9800M GT has 960 MB more video memory than the Graphics 540, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the 9800M GT also has superior memory performance overall.

The 9800M GT has 68.3 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Graphics 540, which means that the memory performance of the 9800M GT is much better than the Graphics 540.

The Iris Graphics 540 Mobile has 48 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 9800M GT SLI has 192. However, the actual shader performance of the Graphics 540 is 403 and the actual shader performance of the 9800M GT is 96. The Graphics 540 having 307 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the 9800M GT performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The Graphics 540 transistor size technology is 51 nm (nanometers) smaller than the 9800M GT. This means that the Graphics 540 is expected to run massively cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the 9800M GT. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the Graphics 540 should consume less power than the 9800M GT.

The Iris Graphics 540 Mobile requires 15 Watts to run and the GeForce 9800M GT SLI requires 130 Watts. The 9800M GT requires 115 Watts more than the Graphics 540 to run. The difference is significant enough that the 9800M GT may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Graphics 540.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Intel Iris Graphics 540 Mobile are Integrated Graphics in some of Intel's Skylake Mobile Processors.

Architecture
The Skylake Architecture succeeds the Broadwell Architecture and aims for increased CPU and Graphics Performance, within the same Power Requirements. It includes support for DirectX 12.1, OpenCL 2.0 and OpenGL 4.4, as well as DDR4 Memory Support.
The GPU Codenamed GT3-U offers 48 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 2 ROPs.

GPU
The Central Unit Initially Runs at 350MHz and goes up to 1050MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory: Speed
The Operating Memory Clock depends at which speed the System's RAM is running and which Memory Type is installed and is ultimately limited by the highest operating speed that the Processor supports. In this case, it is 933MHz for DDR3 and 1067MHz for DDR4.
Depending on whether or not the System's RAM is Dual-Channeled, it can access either a 64-bit or 128-bit Memory Interface.
An addition to the Iris Graphics is the access to a L4 Cache of 64MB eDRAM which further increases the Memory Performance.

Memory: Frame Buffer
The GPU Shares the System's RAM which varies according to the System. The GPU may reserve up to 1.7GB.

Performance
Because Performance depends heavily on the Memory Bandwidth, it may vary heavily from System to System.
Best Case Scenario, expect Performance Identical to a dedicated GeForce 830M.

System Suggestions
Intel Iris Graphics 540 Mobile is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1366x768. We recommend 4GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
GeForce 9800M GT SLI is a solution of two GeForce 9800M GT put together using NVIDIA'S SLI technology.
Check the page of GeForce 9800M GT to know more about its chip.
As usual, SLI relies a lot on proper driver support and may suffer from micro-stuttering in lower frame rates (below 30). Benchmarks indicate the performance is overall, up to X% better than a single GeForce 9800M GT performing by itself but at times (depending whether or not the 3D game supports SLI or in the graphics driver) it performed worse than a single GeForce 9800M GT.
A few demanding games will run at the highest settings with fluent frame rates (30+) but overall most games will require reduced settings to be played optimally.
