In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M Mac 1GB Edition are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce 840M 2GB.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 129 MHz higher core clock speed than the GT 650M, but the GT 650M has 8 more Texture Mapping Units than the GeForce 840M 2GB. As a result, the GT 650M exhibits a 4.1 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GeForce 840M 2GB. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 129 MHz higher core clock speed than the GT 650M, but the GT 650M has 8 more Render Output Units than the GeForce 840M 2GB. As a result, the GT 650M exhibits a 6.2 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GeForce 840M 2GB. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GeForce 840M 2GB was released over a year more recently than the GT 650M, and so the GeForce 840M 2GB is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GT 650M.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has 1024 MB more video memory than the GT 650M, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, overall, the GT 650M has superior memory performance.

The GT 650M has 64.3 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce 840M 2GB, which means that the memory performance of the GT 650M is much better than the GeForce 840M 2GB.

Both the GeForce GT 650M Mac 1GB Edition and the GeForce 840M 2GB have 384 Shader Processing Units. While the two GPUs have the same number of SPUs, the actual performance delivered by the GeForce 840M 2GB is 583 and by the GT 650M is 583. Knowing that the shader performance of the GeForce 840M 2GB is superior, it is not necessary to examine the GPUs' respective Texture and Pixel Fill Rates.

The GeForce GT 650M Mac 1GB Edition requires 45 Watts to run and the GeForce 840M 2GB requires 33 Watts. The GT 650M requires 12 Watts more than the GeForce 840M 2GB to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GT 650M to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GeForce 840M 2GB.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce GT 650M Mac 1GB Edition is a Fast-Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the first revision of the Kepler Architecture.

Architecture
The Kepler Architecture was NVIDIA's big step to power efficiency. Each Stream Multiprocessor (SMX) now hosts 192 Shader Processing Units - against the 48 of older Fermi Architecture, and has been redesigned being now clocked at the same speed of the Central Unit. This means they are more energy efficient and will consequently lead to cooler operating temperatures. However, it also means they are weaker. It can be said that one Fermi SMX is as fast as 2 Kepler SMXs.
Additionally, and not available in all GPUs, Kepler also introduced the Boost Clock Feature. The Boost Clock is an even higher Clock Speed activated when in gaming mode and becomes the effective speed of the GPU.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed GK107 which has 2 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 900MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1254MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 45W, it is suited for average sized laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks indicate its performance is similar to GeForce GTX 660M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a decent processor and 8GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GT 650M Mac 1GB Edition.
Overview
GeForce 840M 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Maxwell architecture features many improvements and among them is the extremely large L2 Cache which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM108 which has 3 SM activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1029MHz and goes up to 1124MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The Frame Buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1001MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.2 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 33W, it will only be equipped in average sized notebooks.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 20% faster than the older GeForce GT 740M. Therefore, it should match GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce 840M 2GB.
