In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Palit JetStream 4GB Edition are noticeably better than the AMD Radeon HD 7950 Boost Edition Crossfire.

The GTX 980 has a 276 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 7950, but the HD 7950 has 96 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 980. As a result, the HD 7950 exhibits a 46.3 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GTX 980. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 980 has a 276 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 7950 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the GTX 980 providing 17.7 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 980 was released over a year more recently than the HD 7950, and so the GTX 980 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD 7950.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The HD 7950 has 2048 MB more video memory than the GTX 980, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 7950 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 7950 has 255.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 980, which means that the memory performance of the HD 7950 is massively better than the GTX 980.

The Radeon HD 7950 Boost Edition Crossfire has 3584 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 980 Palit JetStream 4GB Edition has 2048. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 7950 is 2818 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 980 is 3362. The GTX 980 having 544 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the HD 7950 performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The GeForce GTX 980 Palit JetStream 4GB Edition requires 180 Watts to run but there is no entry for the HD 7950. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 980, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the HD 7950.

The Clock Frequencies of both Central Unit and Operating Memory Clock Remain the Same.

Cooling Solution
The reference NVIDIA Single-Fan Cooling System has been replaced by Palit's Dual Fan Cooling Solution. This means the card runs much cooler under load.

Power Consumption
According to Palit, the Rated Board TDP is now of 180W. A 500W PSU with at least one 6-pin and one 8-pin available connectors is required.
