In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 PNY XLR8 Pro OC 4GB Edition are significantly better than the AMD Radeon HD 8950 (OEM).

The GTX 980 has a 378 MHz higher core clock speed and 16 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 8950. This results in the GTX 980 providing 62 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 980 has a 378 MHz higher core clock speed and 32 more Render Output Units than the HD 8950. This results in the GTX 980 providing 51.4 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 980 was released over a year more recently than the HD 8950, and so the GTX 980 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD 8950.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GTX 980 has 1024 MB more video memory than the HD 8950, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 980 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 8950 has 15.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 980, which means that the memory performance of the HD 8950 is slightly better than the GTX 980.

The GeForce GTX 980 PNY XLR8 Pro OC 4GB Edition has 2048 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) has 1792. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 980 is 3674 and the actual shader performance of the HD 8950 is 1658. The GTX 980 having 2016 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 980 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 8950.

The GeForce GTX 980 PNY XLR8 Pro OC 4GB Edition requires 180 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) requires 200 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the GTX 980 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 8950. The HD 8950 requires 20 Watts more than the GTX 980 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the HD 8950 to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GTX 980.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce GTX 980 PNY XLR8 Pro OC 4GB Edition is a special edition of NVIDIA's high-end GeForce GTX 980 4GB.

Overclock: Central Unit
The Central Unit now runs at 1228MHz, instead of 1126MHz. Boost Clock is now of 1329MHz, instead of 1216MHz.

Overclock: Memory Clock
The Operating Memory Clock was increased to 1800MHz while the Frame Buffer remain the same.

Cooling Solution
The reference NVIDIA Single-Fan Cooling System has been replaced by PNY's Dual Fan Cooling Solution. This means the card runs cooler under load.

Benchmarks indicate a 9% performance over the reference GeForce GTX 980 4GB.
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is an OEM Only, High-End Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

The GCN 1.1 revision of the Graphics Core Next Architecture adds new important technologies and is largely oriented for energy efficiency. New technologies such as PowerTune and TrueAudio are the biggest additions as well as DirectX 11.2 support.

It equips a GPU Codenamed Tahiti PRO2 which has 28 Compute Units activated and thus offers 1792 Shader Processing Units, 112 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 850MHz and goes up to 925MHz, in Turbo Mode.

The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 384-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The Memory Clock Operates at 1250MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 200W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with two available 6-pin connectors.

Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7950 Boost Edition and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a Strong Processor (Intel Core i5 Quad Core/AMD FX Six Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
