In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GT 640 v3 Zotac 2GB Edition are marginally better than the Nvidia GeForce GT 740 Asus 2GB Edition.

The GT 640 has a 53 MHz higher core clock speed than the GT 740, but the GT 740 has 16 more Texture Mapping Units than the GT 640. As a result, the GT 740 exhibits a 15.1 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GT 640. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GT 640 has a 53 MHz higher core clock speed than the GT 740, but the GT 740 has 8 more Render Output Units than the GT 640. As a result, the GT 740 exhibits a 7.5 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GT 640. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GT 740 was released less than a year after the GT 640, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The GeForce GT 640 v3 Zotac 2GB Edition and the GeForce GT 740 Asus 2GB Edition have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The GT 640 has 11.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GT 740, which means that the memory performance of the GT 640 is slightly better than the GT 740.

Both the GeForce GT 640 v3 Zotac 2GB Edition and the GeForce GT 740 Asus 2GB Edition have 384 Shader Processing Units. While the two GPUs have the same number of SPUs, the actual performance delivered by the GT 640 is 402 and by the GT 740 is 381. Knowing that the shader performance of the GT 640 is superior, it is not necessary to examine the GPUs' respective Texture and Pixel Fill Rates.

The GeForce GT 640 v3 Zotac 2GB Edition requires 49 Watts to run and the GeForce GT 740 Asus 2GB Edition requires 64 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 350 Watts for the GT 640 and a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the GT 740. The GT 740 requires 15 Watts more than the GT 640 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GT 740 to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GT 640.

The Central Unit runs at the same speed.

Overclock: Memory Clock
The Operating Memory Clock and the Frame Buffer remain the same.

Cooling Solution
The Cooling System has been replaced by Zotac's Silent Cooling Solution.

Performance
Without Overclocking Out of The Box, GeForce GT 640 v3 Zotac 2GB Edition is as fast as the reference GeForce GT 640 v3.
GeForce GT 740 Asus 2GB Edition is a special edition of the middle-class GeForce GT 740.
This edition comes with a custom cooling solution which will not yield any performance boost, as GeForce GT 740 does not benefit from the GPU Boost 2.0 technology.
Since it doesn't come overclocked out of the box, its performance is exactly like the reference GeForce GT 740.
