In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB are marginally better than the Nvidia GeForce GT 640 v3 Zotac 2GB Edition.

The GT 640 has a 396 MHz higher core clock speed than the 8800 GTS, but the 8800 GTS has 48 more Texture Mapping Units than the GT 640. As a result, the 8800 GTS exhibits a 24.9 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GT 640. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GT 640 has a 396 MHz higher core clock speed than the 8800 GTS, but the 8800 GTS has 8 more Render Output Units than the GT 640. As a result, the 8800 GTS exhibits a 2 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GT 640. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GT 640 was released over three years more recently than the 8800 GTS, and so the GT 640 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the 8800 GTS when running the latest games.

The GT 640 has 1536 MB more video memory than the 8800 GTS, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GT 640 also has superior memory performance overall.

This means that the GT 640 is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the 8800 GTS. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the GT 640 should consume less power than the 8800 GTS.

We would recommend a PSU with at least 350 Watts for the GT 640 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the 8800 GTS. The 8800 GTS requires 86 Watts more than the GT 640 to run. The difference is significant enough that the 8800 GTS may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GT 640.

Without Overclocking Out of The Box, GeForce GT 640 v3 Zotac 2GB Edition is as fast as the reference GeForce GT 640 v3.
GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB is a high-end GFX based on the 65nm variant of the first-shader unified architecture.
It's based on the G92 Core and offers 128 Shader Processing Units, 64 TMUs and 16 ROPs, on a 256-bit memory interface of GDDR3. The central unit runs at 650MHz and the memory clock operates 800MHz. It will consume no more than 135 Watt.
It's therefore related to GeForce 8800 GTX (in terms of Core Configuration, not technology) and should perform just a little worse at lower resolutions and considerably slower on higher resolutions. It's significantly faster than the 640MB variant based on the G80 Core.
Today's modern demanding games can be played at medium (some) or high settings (a good deal of them) smoothly. However, DirectX 11 based games aren't supported.
