In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8850M v2 are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce 840M 2GB.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 504 MHz higher core clock speed but 16 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the HD 8850M. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the GeForce 840M 2GB manages to provide 3.7 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 504 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 8850M, but the HD 8850M has 8 more Render Output Units than the GeForce 840M 2GB. As a result, the HD 8850M exhibits a 0.2 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GeForce 840M 2GB. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GeForce 840M 2GB was released less than a year after the HD 8850M, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The Radeon HD 8850M v2 and the GeForce 840M 2GB have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The HD 8850M has 56 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce 840M 2GB, which means that the memory performance of the HD 8850M is much better than the GeForce 840M 2GB.

The Radeon HD 8850M v2 has 640 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 840M 2GB has 384. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 8850M is 464 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 840M 2GB is 583. The GeForce 840M 2GB having 119 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the HD 8850M performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The Radeon HD 8850M v2 requires 45 Watts to run and the GeForce 840M 2GB requires 33 Watts. The HD 8850M requires 12 Watts more than the GeForce 840M 2GB to run. The difference is not significant enough for the HD 8850M to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GeForce 840M 2GB.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 8850M v2 is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the GCN Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.1 Release adds support for AMD's TrueAudio Technology which does calculations of audio effects "better" than the CPU and further improves the Powertune Technology.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Venus PRO which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Operates at 525MHz and goes up to 725MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The memory clock operates at 1125MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 45W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance on average with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 660M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 8850M v2.
Overview
GeForce 840M 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Maxwell architecture features many improvements and among them is the extremely large L2 Cache which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM108 which has 3 SM activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1029MHz and goes up to 1124MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The Frame Buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1001MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.2 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 33W, it will only be equipped in average sized notebooks.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 20% faster than the older GeForce GT 740M. Therefore, it should match GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce 840M 2GB.
