In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8850M are massively better than the AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5450.
The Radeon HD has a 50 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon HD 8850M, but the Radeon HD 8850M has 32 more Texture Mapping Units than the Radeon HD. As a result, the Radeon HD 8850M exhibits a 19.6 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the Radeon HD. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The Radeon HD has a 50 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon HD 8850M, but the Radeon HD 8850M has 12 more Render Output Units than the Radeon HD. As a result, the Radeon HD 8850M exhibits a 7.3 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the Radeon HD. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The Radeon HD 8850M was released over three years more recently than the Radeon HD, and so the Radeon HD 8850M is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Radeon HD when running the latest games.
The Radeon HD 8850M has 1024 MB more video memory than the Radeon HD, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the Radeon HD 8850M also has superior memory performance overall.
The Radeon HD 8850M has 19.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD, which means that the memory performance of the Radeon HD 8850M is slightly better than the Radeon HD.
The Radeon HD 8850M has 640 Shader Processing Units and the Mobility Radeon HD 5450 has 80. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 8850M is 496 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD is 27. The Radeon HD 8850M having 469 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 8850M delivers a significantly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Radeon HD.
The Radeon HD 8850M transistor size technology is 12 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Radeon HD. This means that the Radeon HD 8850M is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Radeon HD.
The Radeon HD 8850M requires 45 Watts to run and the Mobility Radeon HD 5450 requires 11 Watts. The Radeon HD 8850M requires 34 Watts more than the Radeon HD to run. The difference is significant enough that the Radeon HD 8850M may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Radeon HD.

Mini Review | Overview Radeon HD 8850M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the GCN Architecture. Architecture The GCN 1.1 Release adds support for AMD's TrueAudio Technology which does calculations of audio effects "better" than the CPU and further improves the Powertune Technology. GPU It equips a GPU codenamed Venus PRO which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Operates at 625MHz and goes up to 775MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1000MHz. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 45W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops. Performance Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above NVIDIA's GeForce GT 750M. System Suggestions We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 8850M. | Mobility Radeon HD 5450 is a entry-level GPU based on the 40nm, Terascale 2 architecture. It's based on the Parks PRO Core and offers 80 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs, on 64-bit memory interface of standard GDDR3. The central unit runs at 675MHz and the memory clock operates at up to 800MHz. It consumes no more than 11 Watt. Benchmarks indicate modern demanding games of 2007-2010, such as Crysis, BF2 and Metro 2033 were only playable at low settings smoothly, using a 1024x768 resolution. Therefore, today's modern demanding games should only be playable on the lowest preset, using a 1024x768 resolution and extremely demanding modern games such as Crysis 3 might not be playable at all. |
