In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M 8GB are massively better than the AMD Radeon HD 8850M.

The GTX 980M has a 413 MHz higher core clock speed and 56 more Texture Mapping Units than the Radeon HD 8850M. This results in the GTX 980M providing 74.6 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 980M has a 413 MHz higher core clock speed and 48 more Render Output Units than the Radeon HD 8850M. This results in the GTX 980M providing 56.4 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 980M was released over a year more recently than the Radeon HD 8850M, and so the GTX 980M is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the Radeon HD 8850M.

The GTX 980M has 6144 MB more video memory than the Radeon HD 8850M, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 980M also has superior memory performance overall.

The GTX 980M has 128.4 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 8850M, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 980M is massively better than the Radeon HD 8850M.

The Radeon HD 8850M has 640 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 980M 8GB has 1536. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 8850M is 496 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 980M is 2337. The GTX 980M having 1841 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 980M delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Radeon HD 8850M.

The Radeon HD 8850M requires 45 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 980M 8GB requires 100 Watts. The GTX 980M requires 55 Watts more than the Radeon HD 8850M to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 980M may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Radeon HD 8850M.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 8850M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the GCN Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.1 Release adds support for AMD's TrueAudio Technology which does calculations of audio effects "better" than the CPU and further improves the Powertune Technology.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Venus PRO which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Operates at 625MHz and goes up to 775MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1000MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 45W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above NVIDIA's GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 8850M.
Overview
GeForce GTX 980M 8GB is a high-end Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Maxwell Architecture, despite being also manufactured with a 28nm technology, has an extremely large L2 Cache and features a Third Generation Delta Color Compression which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.
The Second Revision of Maxwell also adds the VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination) Technology which makes scenes significantly more lifelike and believable as light interacts more realistically in the game environment and the MFAA Technology which provides the same effect as MSAA but at a much lower performance cost.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM204-N16E-GX-A2 which has 12 SM activated and thus offers 1536 Shader Processing Units, 96 TMUs and 64 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1038MHz and goes up to 1127MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 8GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The memory clock operates at 1253MHz. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way adds extra performance.

Features
DirectX 12.0 Support (11.2 Hardware Default) and support for SLI, GameStream, G-SYNC, GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 100W, it will only be equipped in very large notebooks.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 30% faster than GeForce GTX 880M. Therefore, it should even surpass GeForce GTX 770 and be around as fast as desktop GeForce GTX 780.
GeForce GTX 980M is therefore the fastest mobile Graphics Card as of October 2014 and AMD's Radeon R9 M290X is beaten in over 40%.

System Suggestions
We recommend a very strong processor (Intel Core i7 Mobile Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce GTX 980M 8GB.
