In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8850M are massively better than the AMD Mobility Radeon X1800.
The Radeon HD 8850M was released over three years more recently than the Mobility Radeon X1800, and so the Radeon HD 8850M is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Mobility Radeon X1800 when running the latest games.
The Radeon HD 8850M has 1792 MB more video memory than the Mobility Radeon X1800, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the Radeon HD 8850M also has superior memory performance overall.
The memory bandwidth of the Radeon HD 8850M and the Mobility Radeon X1800 are the same, which means the Radeon HD 8850M and the Mobility Radeon X1800 have equal limitations when it comes to graphical data transfer.
The Radeon HD 8850M has 640 Shader Processing Units and the Mobility Radeon X1800 has 8. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 8850M is 496 and the actual shader performance of the Mobility Radeon X1800 is 2. The Radeon HD 8850M having 494 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 8850M delivers a noticeably smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Mobility Radeon X1800.
The Radeon HD 8850M requires 45 Watts to run but there is no entry for the Mobility Radeon X1800.

Mini Review | Overview Radeon HD 8850M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the GCN Architecture. Architecture The GCN 1.1 Release adds support for AMD's TrueAudio Technology which does calculations of audio effects "better" than the CPU and further improves the Powertune Technology. GPU It equips a GPU codenamed Venus PRO which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Operates at 625MHz and goes up to 775MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1000MHz. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 45W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops. Performance Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above NVIDIA's GeForce GT 750M. System Suggestions We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 8850M. | ATI?s Mobility Radeon? X1800 is one of the world?s most powerful mobile graphics technologies for gaming enthusiasts and performance notebook PCs, combining top 3D graphics performance, high quality video playback, and exceptional image quality. A 90-nanometer process GPU adds visual velocity to a new hyper-efficient 3D architecture featuring ultra-threaded operation, high bandwidth GDDR3 RAM, and a new ring-bus memory controller. Full DirectX? 9 Shader Model 3.0 support renders lifelike 3D characters and scenes and enables incredible visual effects for gaming. Enhanced with ATI?s revolutionary ATI Avivo? visual quality and high-definition video playback, Mobility Radeon X1800 technology transforms your notebook into a home theater-quality mobile entertainment system. |
