In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8850M are significantly better than the Nvidia Quadro FX 3700M.

The Radeon HD 8850M was released over three years more recently than the Quadro FX 3700M, and so the Radeon HD 8850M is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Quadro FX 3700M when running the latest games.

The Radeon HD 8850M has 1024 MB more video memory than the Quadro FX 3700M, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, the overall memory performance is about the same.

The Quadro FX 3700M has 19.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 8850M, which means that the memory performance of the Quadro FX 3700M is slightly better than the Radeon HD 8850M.

The Radeon HD 8850M has 640 Shader Processing Units and the Quadro FX 3700M has 128. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 8850M is 496 and the actual shader performance of the Quadro FX 3700M is 70. The Radeon HD 8850M having 426 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 8850M delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Quadro FX 3700M.

The Radeon HD 8850M transistor size technology is 37 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Quadro FX 3700M. This means that the Radeon HD 8850M is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Quadro FX 3700M.

The Radeon HD 8850M requires 45 Watts to run and the Quadro FX 3700M requires 75 Watts. The Quadro FX 3700M requires 30 Watts more than the Radeon HD 8850M to run. The difference is not significant enough for the Quadro FX 3700M to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon HD 8850M.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 8850M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the GCN Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.1 Release adds support for AMD's TrueAudio Technology which does calculations of audio effects "better" than the CPU and further improves the Powertune Technology.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Venus PRO which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Operates at 625MHz and goes up to 775MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1000MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 45W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above NVIDIA's GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 8850M.
The Quadro® FX 3700M high-end mobile workstation graphics solution with its revolutionary unified architecture, delivers 1 GB memory, excellent image quality, and optimized visual computing application performance pushing the limits of a 17" mobile workstation. The reference standard for OpenGL 2.1, DirectX 10, and Shader Model 4.0, Quadro FX 3700M enables next generation applications with new levels of interactivity to meet the demands of CAD engineers, graphics designers, and other technical design professionals.
