In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M SLI are massively better than the AMD Radeon HD 8850M.
The GTX 780M has a 146 MHz higher core clock speed and 216 more Texture Mapping Units than the Radeon HD 8850M. This results in the GTX 780M providing 172.4 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.
The GTX 780M has a 146 MHz higher core clock speed and 48 more Render Output Units than the Radeon HD 8850M. This results in the GTX 780M providing 39.3 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.
The GTX 780M was released less than a year after the Radeon HD 8850M, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.
The GTX 780M has 6144 MB more video memory than the Radeon HD 8850M, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 780M also has superior memory performance overall.
The GTX 780M has 288 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 8850M, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 780M is massively better than the Radeon HD 8850M.
The Radeon HD 8850M has 640 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 780M SLI has 3072. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 8850M is 496 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 780M is 2448. The GTX 780M having 1952 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 780M delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Radeon HD 8850M.
The Radeon HD 8850M requires 45 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 780M SLI requires 200 Watts. The GTX 780M requires 155 Watts more than the Radeon HD 8850M to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 780M may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Radeon HD 8850M.

Mini Review | Overview Radeon HD 8850M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the Second Revision of the GCN Architecture. Architecture The GCN 1.1 Release adds support for AMD's TrueAudio Technology which does calculations of audio effects "better" than the CPU and further improves the Powertune Technology. GPU It equips a GPU codenamed Venus PRO which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Initially Operates at 625MHz and goes up to 775MHz, in Turbo Mode. Memory The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1000MHz. Features DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies. Power Consumption With a rated board TDP of 45W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops. Performance Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above NVIDIA's GeForce GT 750M. System Suggestions We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 8850M. | GeForce GTX 780M SLI is a combination of 2 GeForce GTX 780M put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology. Together, this combination offers 3072 Shader Processing Units, 256 TMUs and 64 ROPs. This, on a 256-bit memory interface, per card, of fast GDDR5. While the central unit runs at 771MHz and goes up to 797MHz, in Turbo Mode, the memory clock operates at 1250MHz. Best case scenario, this combination is expected to offer similar perform to a single desktop GeForce GTX Titan but ultimately, its performance depends on the driver support and on the 3D application. Therefore, and paired with a powerful processor, all demanding games should be playable at the highest settings. Still, this combination might surpass the 220W barrier of TDP and so only a few laptops will offer it. |
