In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 3800 series are significantly better than the AMD Radeon HD 7470.

The HD 3800 has no core clock speed set, so any comparison between Texture and Pixel Fill Rates is not currently possible.

The Radeon HD 7470 was released over three years more recently than the HD 3800, and so the Radeon HD 7470 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the HD 3800 when running the latest games.

The Radeon HD 7470 and the Radeon HD 3800 series have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The Radeon HD 7470 has 28.8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 3800, which means that the memory performance of the Radeon HD 7470 is slightly better than the HD 3800.

The Radeon HD 7470 has 160 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 3800 series has 320. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 7470 is 60 and the actual shader performance of the HD 3800 is 0. The Radeon HD 7470 having 60 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 7470 delivers a slightly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 3800.

The Radeon HD 7470 transistor size technology is 15 nm (nanometers) smaller than the HD 3800. This means that the Radeon HD 7470 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the HD 3800.

The Radeon HD 7470 requires 18 Watts to run but there is no entry for the Radeon HD 3800 series. We would recommend a PSU with at least 300 Watts for the Radeon HD 7470.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 7470 is an entry-level Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Terascale 2 Architecture is still manufactured with a 40nm technology and despite allowing more Stream Cores, their design remains more or less the same compared to the first variant.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Caicos XT which has 2 Compute Units activated and thus offers 160 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs. The Central Unit Operates at 750MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 512MB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 64-bit memory interface. The memory clock operates at 900MHz. The size of the frame buffer is adequate.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for HD3D, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, PowerPlay and other technologies.

Cooling Solution
The Cooling Solution consists of a Single-Fan.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 18W, it requires at least a 300W PSU and it relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Performance
Radeon HD 7470 is a direct re-brand of Radeon HD 6450 v2.
Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above of a GeForce GT 520.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Celeron) and 4GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7470.
Radeon HD 3800 Series is not a GPU but instead a combination between Radeon HD 3830, Radeon HD 3850 and Radeon HD 3870 whose rank is a balance between the three and that exists for System Requirements purposes only.
