In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 3870 are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 6670 v2 MSI 2GB Edition.

The HD 6670 has a 23 MHz higher core clock speed and 8 more Texture Mapping Units than the Radeon HD 3870. This results in the HD 6670 providing 6.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 6670 has a 23 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon HD 3870, but the Radeon HD 3870 has 8 more Render Output Units than the HD 6670. As a result, the Radeon HD 3870 exhibits a 6 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the HD 6670. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 6670 was released over three years more recently than the Radeon HD 3870, and so the HD 6670 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Radeon HD 3870 when running the latest games.

The HD 6670 has 1536 MB more video memory than the Radeon HD 3870, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, overall, the Radeon HD 3870 has superior memory performance.

The Radeon HD 3870 has 50.8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 6670, which means that the memory performance of the Radeon HD 3870 is much better than the HD 6670.

The Radeon HD 6670 v2 MSI 2GB Edition has 480 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 3870 has 320. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 6670 is 192 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 3870 is 249. The Radeon HD 3870 having 57 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 3870 delivers a noticeably smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 6670.

The HD 6670 transistor size technology is 15 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Radeon HD 3870. This means that the HD 6670 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Radeon HD 3870. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the HD 6670 should consume less power than the Radeon HD 3870.

The Radeon HD 6670 v2 MSI 2GB Edition requires 66 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 3870 requires 106 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 6670 and a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the Radeon HD 3870. The Radeon HD 3870 requires 40 Watts more than the HD 6670 to run. The difference is significant enough that the Radeon HD 3870 may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 6670.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 6670 v2 MSI 2GB Edition is a special edition of AMD's fast-middle-class Radeon HD 6670 v2, created by MSI.

Overclock: Central Unit
The Central Unit runs at the same speed.

Overclock: Memory Clock
The Operating Memory Clock runs at 667MHz and the Frame Buffer was raised to 2GB. This is a gimmick and in no way benefits the GPU.

Cooling Solution
The Cooling System remains the same.

Without Overclocking Out of The Box, Radeon HD 6670 v2 MSI 2GB Edition is as fast as the reference Radeon HD 6670 v2.
Radeon HD 3870 is a high-end GPU based on the 55nm, second unified shader architecture, R600.
It's based on the RV670 XT Core and offers 320 Shader Processing Units, 16 TMUs and 16 ROPs a 256-bit memory interface of energy efficient GDDR4. The central unit runs at 777MHz and the memory clock runs at up to 1126MHz.
Compared to Radeon HD 3850, it offers extra bandwidth (thanks to the higher operating memory clock resultant from using GDDR4) and the central unit is higher clocked. However, it also consumes up to around extra 30W. This value would be higher were standard GDDR3 used.
Today's modern games should run fluently at medium settings but with modest resolutions. DirectX 11 games aren't supported.
