In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 6670 v2 MSI 2GB Edition.

The HD 6670 has a 57 MHz higher core clock speed and 8 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 2900 XT. This results in the HD 6670 providing 7.3 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 6670 has a 57 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 2900 XT, but the HD 2900 XT has 8 more Render Output Units than the HD 6670. As a result, the HD 2900 XT exhibits a 5.5 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the HD 6670. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 6670 was released over three years more recently than the HD 2900 XT, and so the HD 6670 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the HD 2900 XT when running the latest games.

The HD 6670 has 1536 MB more video memory than the HD 2900 XT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, overall, the HD 2900 XT has superior memory performance.

The HD 2900 XT has 84.7 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 6670, which means that the memory performance of the HD 2900 XT is much better than the HD 6670.

The Radeon HD 6670 v2 MSI 2GB Edition has 480 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB has 320. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 6670 is 192 and the actual shader performance of the HD 2900 XT is 155. The HD 6670 having 37 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the HD 2900 XT performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The HD 6670 transistor size technology is 40 nm (nanometers) smaller than the HD 2900 XT. This means that the HD 6670 is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the HD 2900 XT. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the HD 6670 should consume less power than the HD 2900 XT.

The Radeon HD 6670 v2 MSI 2GB Edition requires 66 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB requires 215 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 6670 and a PSU with at least 550 Watts for the HD 2900 XT. The HD 2900 XT requires 149 Watts more than the HD 6670 to run. The difference is significant enough that the HD 2900 XT may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 6670.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 6670 v2 MSI 2GB Edition is a special edition of AMD's fast-middle-class Radeon HD 6670 v2, created by MSI.

Overclock: Central Unit
The Central Unit runs at the same speed.

Overclock: Memory Clock
The Operating Memory Clock runs at 667MHz and the Frame Buffer was raised to 2GB. This is a gimmick and in no way benefits the GPU.

Cooling Solution
The Cooling System remains the same.

Performance
Without Overclocking Out of The Box, Radeon HD 6670 v2 MSI 2GB Edition is as fast as the reference Radeon HD 6670 v2.
Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB is a high-end GPU based on the 80nm variant of the second unified shader architecture, R600.
It's based on the R600 XT Core and offers 320 Shader Processing Units, 16 TMUs and 16 ROPs on a 512-bit memory interface of standard GDDR3. The central unit runs at 743MHz and the memory clock runs at up to 828MHz.
Its performance is somewhat faster than Radeon HD 2900 Pro due to being higher clocked and the extra memory bandwidth is bottlenecked by the small sized frame buffer and thus most games have to be played using a 1024x768 resolution but should be playable at high settings.
