In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) are massively better than the Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 MSI Cyclone 1GB Edition.

The GTS 450 and the HD 8950 have the same core clock speed of 850 MHz, but the HD 8950 has 80 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTS 450. As a result, the HD 8950 exhibits a 68 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GTS 450. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTS 450 and the HD 8950 have the same core clock speed of 850 MHz, but the HD 8950 has 16 more Render Output Units than the GTS 450. As a result, the HD 8950 exhibits a 13.6 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GTS 450. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 8950 was released over a year more recently than the GTS 450, and so the HD 8950 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTS 450.

The HD 8950 has 2048 MB more video memory than the GTS 450, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 8950 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 8950 has 177.3 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTS 450, which means that the memory performance of the HD 8950 is massively better than the GTS 450.

The GeForce GTS 450 MSI Cyclone 1GB Edition has 192 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) has 1792. However, the actual shader performance of the GTS 450 is 326 and the actual shader performance of the HD 8950 is 1658. The HD 8950 having 1332 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 8950 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTS 450.

The HD 8950 transistor size technology is 12 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GTS 450. This means that the HD 8950 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GTS 450.

The GeForce GTS 450 MSI Cyclone 1GB Edition requires 106 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) requires 200 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the GTS 450 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 8950. The HD 8950 requires 94 Watts more than the GTS 450 to run. The difference is significant enough that the HD 8950 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTS 450.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce GTS 450 MSI Cyclone 1GB Edition is a special edition of NVIDIA's fast-middle-class GeForce GTS 450, created by MSI.

Overclock Out of The Box
The Central Unit is now of 850MHz, instead of 783MHz while the Operating Memory Clock was increased to 980MHz.

Cooling Solution
The Cooling System was replaced by MSI's Cyclone Thermal Design which means the Graphics Card runs cooler under load.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate a 8% performance boost over the reference GeForce GTS 450.
Overview
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is an OEM Only, High-End Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.1 revision of the Graphics Core Next Architecture adds new important technologies and is largely oriented for energy efficiency. New technologies such as PowerTune and TrueAudio are the biggest additions as well as DirectX 11.2 support.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Tahiti PRO2 which has 28 Compute Units activated and thus offers 1792 Shader Processing Units, 112 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 850MHz and goes up to 925MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 384-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The Memory Clock Operates at 1250MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 200W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with two available 6-pin connectors.

Performance
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7950 Boost Edition and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a Strong Processor (Intel Core i5 Quad Core/AMD FX Six Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
