In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Galax HOF 4GB Edition are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 SLI.

The GTX 980 has a 258 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 770, but the GTX 770 has 128 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 980. As a result, the GTX 770 exhibits a 100.9 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GTX 980. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 980 has a 258 MHz higher core clock speed than the GTX 770 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the GTX 980 providing 16.6 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 980 was released over a year more recently than the GTX 770, and so the GTX 980 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GTX 770.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GeForce GTX 980 Galax HOF 4GB Edition and the GeForce GTX 770 SLI have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The GTX 770 has 224.1 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 980, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 770 is massively better than the GTX 980.

The GeForce GTX 980 Galax HOF 4GB Edition has 2048 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 770 SLI has 3072. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 980 is 3920 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 770 is 3333. The GTX 980 having 587 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the GTX 770 performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The GeForce GTX 980 Galax HOF 4GB Edition requires 165 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 770 SLI requires 400 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the GTX 980 and a PSU with at least 750 Watts for the GTX 770. The GTX 770 requires 235 Watts more than the GTX 980 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 770 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTX 980.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce GTX 980 Galax HOF 4GB Edition is a special edition of NVIDIA's high-end GeForce GTX 980 4GB.

Overclock Out of The Box
The Central Unit now runs at 1304MHz, instead of 1126MHz. Boost Clock is now of 1418MHz, instead of 1216MHz. Memory Clock was left untouched.

Cooling Solution
The reference NVIDIA Single-Fan Cooling System has been replaced by Galax's Triple Fan Cooling Solution. This means the card runs cooler under load.

Benchmarks indicate a 13% performance over the reference GeForce GTX 980 4GB.
GeForce GTX 770 SLI is a combination of 2 GeForce GTX 770 put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.
Together, this combination offers 3072 Shader Processing Units, 256 TMUs and 64 ROPs. This, on a 256-bit memory interface, per card, of fast GDDR5. While the central unit runs at 1046MHz and goes up to 1085MHz, in Turbo Mode, the memory clock operates at 1752MHz.
Best case scenario, this combination performs better than dual-graphics GeForce GTX 690 but ultimately, its performance depends on the driver support and on the 3D application.
Therefore, and paired with a powerful processor, all demanding games are playable at the highest settings. Still, this combination might surpass the 450W barrier of TDP and so it will require a very powerful PSU.
