In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 4870 Sapphire Vapor-X 1GB Edition are marginally better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti WindForce Edition.

The GTX 550 Ti has a 220 MHz higher core clock speed but 8 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the HD 4870. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the GTX 550 Ti manages to provide 1 GTexel/s better texturing performance. The Radeon HD 4870 Sapphire Vapor-X 1GB Edition requires 150 Watts to run but there is no entry for the GeForce GTX 550 Ti WindForce Edition. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 4870 and a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the GTX 550 Ti. The HD 4870 has been recommended a PSU with 100 Watts more than the GTX 550 Ti. The difference is significant enough that the HD 4870 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTX 550 Ti.

Overclock: Central Unit
The Central Unit remains the same.

Overclock: Memory Clock
The Operating Memory Clock remains the same while the Frame Buffer was doubled to 1GB: useful at higher resolutions.

Cooling Solution
The Cooling System has been replaced by Sapphire's Vapor-X Cooling Solution, which has cooling module on the GPU together with a heatsink and profiled fan venting heat out of the case.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate a 3% performance over the reference Radeon HD 4870.

The new features include an increase in the clock from 900MHz to 970MHz and a new cooling system.
Benchmarks indicate a 4.5% performance boost when compared to the reference card..
Some modern demanding games will run at the highest settings using a 1080p resolution but the largest part will have to be played with a 720p resolution to be played optimally.
This Graphics Card needs to be paired with a decent Quad Core CPU.
