In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS are significantly better than the AMD Mobility Radeon 9700 Series.

The GeForce 8600M GS was released over three years more recently than the Radeon 9700, and so the GeForce 8600M GS is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Radeon 9700 when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.

The GeForce 8600M GS has 384 MB more video memory than the Radeon 9700, so is likely to be slightly better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GeForce 8600M GS also has superior memory performance overall.

The GeForce 8600M GS has 18 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon 9700, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce 8600M GS is slightly better than the Radeon 9700.

The GeForce 8600M GS has 16 Shader Processing Units and the Mobility Radeon 9700 Series has 2. However, the actual shader performance of the GeForce 8600M GS is 10 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon 9700 is 1. The GeForce 8600M GS having 9 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GeForce 8600M GS delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Radeon 9700.

The GeForce 8600M GS requires 18 Watts to run but there is no entry for the Mobility Radeon 9700 Series.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewGeForce 8600M GS is a middle class level GPU part of the 8000M Series released by NVIDIA, in 2007.
Very demanding games (e.g. Metro 2033, The Witcher 2) are most certainly unplayable and demanding games (e.g. Crysis 2, Skyrim V) might only be playable on the lowest settings. Moderate and less demanding games, like Call of Duty: Black Ops, should be playable smoothly at Medium settings.
