In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GS are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce 6800 XT.

The GeForce 8600 GS was released over a year more recently than the GeForce 6800 XT, and so the GeForce 8600 GS is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GeForce 6800 XT.

The GeForce 8600 GS and the GeForce 6800 XT have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The GeForce 8600 GS has 1.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce 6800 XT, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce 8600 GS is marginally better than the GeForce 6800 XT.

The GeForce 8600 GS has 16 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 6800 XT has 12. However, the actual shader performance of the GeForce 8600 GS is 22 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 6800 XT is 4. The GeForce 8600 GS having 18 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GeForce 8600 GS delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce 6800 XT.

The GeForce 8600 GS requires 47 Watts to run but there is no entry for the GeForce 6800 XT. We would recommend a PSU with at least 350 Watts for the GeForce 8600 GS.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewGeForce 8600 GS is a middle-class GFX based on the 80nm variant of the first-shader unified architecture.
It's based on the G84 Core and offers 16 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 8 ROPs, on a 128-bit memory interface of DDR2. The central unit runs at 540MHz and the memory clock operates at 400MHz. It will consume no more than 47 Watt.
It's therefore more comparable to GeForce 8500 GT and pales in comparison with GeForce 8600 GT.
This GPU is only suited for a 1024x768 (or less) resolution. Most of today's games will only run at low settings and extremely demanding games might not run at all. DirectX 11 based games aren't supported and its performance will decrease drastically, as the resolution increases.
The groundbreaking new NVIDIA GeForce 6800 graphics processing units (GPUs) and their revolutionary technologies power worlds where reality and fantasy meet; worlds in which new standards are set for visual realism and quality, performance, and video functionality. The GeForce 6800 GPUs deliver powerful, elegant graphics to drench your senses, immersing you in unparalleled worlds of visual effects for the ultimate PC experience.
