In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Zotac AMP! Extreme 4GB Edition are significantly better than the AMD FirePro S9150.

The GTX 980 has a 391 MHz higher core clock speed but 48 fewer Texture Mapping Units than the FirePro S9150. The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the GTX 980 manages to provide 6.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 980 has a 391 MHz higher core clock speed than the FirePro S9150 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the GTX 980 providing 25 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 980 was released less than a year after the FirePro S9150, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GTX 980 having 1317 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 980 delivers a noticeably smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the FirePro S9150.

The GeForce GTX 980 Zotac AMP! Extreme 4GB Edition requires 185 Watts to run and the FirePro S9150 requires 235 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 600 Watts for the GTX 980. The FirePro S9150 requires 50 Watts more than the GTX 980 to run. The difference is significant enough that the FirePro S9150 may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTX 980.

Overclock Out of The Box
The Central Unit now runs at 1291MHz, instead of 1126MHz. Boost Clock is now of 1392MHz, instead of 1216MHz. The Operating Memory Clock was increased to 1800MHz.

Cooling Solution
The reference NVIDIA Single-Fan Cooling System has been replaced by Zotac's Triple Fan Cooling Solution. This means the card runs cooler under load.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate a 12% performance over the reference GeForce GTX 980 4GB.
FirePro S9150 is a server GPU based on the 28nm GCN architecture.

It's based on the Hawaii XT Core (same used on Radeon R9 290X) and therefore offers 2816 Shader Processing Units, 176 TMUs and 64 ROPs on a 512-bit interface of fast GDDR5. The central unit is clocked 900MHz while the memory clock operates at 1250MHZ.

Compared to Radeon R9 290X, its central unit is slightly lower and overall its gaming performance is lower than Radeon R9 290X because the latter benefits from certified gaming drivers which unlock the GCN's architecture potential while FirePro S9150 is made for professional applications. Therefore, expect its performance to be between 10% and 15% worse than Radeon R9 290X.
