In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon R7 250 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM).

The R7 250 has a 250 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 8740, but the HD 8740 has 8 more Texture Mapping Units than the R7 250. As a result, the HD 8740 exhibits a 0.4 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the R7 250. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The R7 250 has a 250 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 8740, but the HD 8740 has 8 more Render Output Units than the R7 250. As a result, the HD 8740 exhibits a 4.4 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the R7 250. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The R7 250 was released less than a year after the HD 8740, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The HD 8740 has 1024 MB more video memory than the R7 250, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, overall, the R7 250 has superior memory performance.

The R7 250 has 1.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 8740, which means that the memory performance of the R7 250 is marginally better than the HD 8740.

The Radeon R7 250 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition has 384 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) has 512. However, the actual shader performance of the R7 250 is 359 and the actual shader performance of the HD 8740 is 348. The R7 250 having 11 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the R7 250 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 8740.

The Radeon R7 250 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition requires 65 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the R7 250 and a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740. The R7 250 requires 10 Watts more than the HD 8740 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the R7 250 to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the HD 8740.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon R7 250 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition is a special edition of the middle-class Radeon R7 250 1GB.
This edition comes with a special 10cnm fan, which will reduce the card's temperature and comes overclocked out of the box in the central unit that was increased from 1000MHz to 1050MHz, while the Boost clock is now of 1100MHz.
Benchmarks indicate a 3% performance boost over the standard edition.
Overview
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Performance
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
