In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia Quadro NVS 300 are significantly better than the Nvidia Quadro4 550 XGL.

The Quadro NVS 300 was released over three years more recently than the Quadro4 550 XGL, and so the Quadro NVS 300 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Quadro4 550 XGL when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.

The Quadro NVS 300 has 448 MB more video memory than the Quadro4 550 XGL, so is likely to be slightly better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the Quadro NVS 300 also has superior memory performance overall.

The Quadro NVS 300 has 9.4 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Quadro4 550 XGL, which means that the memory performance of the Quadro NVS 300 is marginally better than the Quadro4 550 XGL.

The Quadro4 550 XGL has 2 Shader Processing Units and the Quadro NVS 300 has 16. However, the actual shader performance of the Quadro4 550 XGL is 1 and the actual shader performance of the Quadro NVS 300 is 22. The Quadro NVS 300 having 21 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Quadro NVS 300 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Quadro4 550 XGL.

The Quadro NVS 300 transistor size technology is 110 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Quadro4 550 XGL. This means that the Quadro NVS 300 is expected to run massively cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Quadro4 550 XGL. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the Quadro NVS 300 should consume less power than the Quadro4 550 XGL.

The Quadro NVS 300 requires 18 Watts to run but there is no entry for the Quadro4 550 XGL. We would recommend a PSU with at least 350 Watts for the Quadro NVS 300, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the Quadro4 550 XGL.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewQuadro4 550 XGL is a professional graphics card that will deliver similar gaming performance to GeForce4 MX 460, though worse due to the lack of support for gaming drivers, lower memory bandwidth and reduced frame buffer size, as well as a lower clocked central unit. The NVIDIA® NVS™ 300 high resolution, multi-display business graphics solution, designed for small and standard form factor systems, delivers reliable hardware and software for a stable business environment. Tested on leading business applications, NVS 300 is capable of driving two VGA, single link DVI, DisplayPort or HDMI displays. With NVIDIA Mosaic™ and NVIDIA nView® technologies built in, you can span and efficiently manage your entire Windows desktop across multiple displays.
