In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Intel GMA X4500 are significantly better than the Nvidia Quadro4 550 XGL.

The GMA X4500 has a 530 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the Quadro4 550 XGL. This results in the GMA X4500 providing 2.1 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since the GMA X4500 supports up to DirectX 10.

The GMA X4500 has a 530 MHz higher core clock speed than the Quadro4 550 XGL and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the GMA X4500 providing 2.1 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. The GMA X4500 supports up to DirectX 10, so pixeling performance is not particularly relevant for this GPU. It would be relevant for comparing the Quadro4 550 XGL with other old GPUs, but in this case it is probably safe to say that the GMA X4500 is superior.

The GMA X4500 was released over three years more recently than the Quadro4 550 XGL, and so the GMA X4500 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the Quadro4 550 XGL when running the latest games.

Both GPUs exhibit very poor performance, so rather than upgrading from one to the other you should consider looking at more powerful GPUs. Neither of these will be able to run the latest games in any playable way.

The Quadro4 550 XGL has 64 MB video memory, but the GMA X4500 does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.

The Quadro4 550 XGL has 2 Shader Processing Units and the GMA X4500 has 10. However, the actual shader performance of the Quadro4 550 XGL is 1 and the actual shader performance of the GMA X4500 is 8. The GMA X4500 having 7 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GMA X4500 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Quadro4 550 XGL.

The GMA X4500 transistor size technology is 85 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Quadro4 550 XGL. This means that the GMA X4500 is expected to run massively cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Quadro4 550 XGL. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the GMA X4500 should consume less power than the Quadro4 550 XGL.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewQuadro4 550 XGL is a professional graphics card that will deliver similar gaming performance to GeForce4 MX 460, though worse due to the lack of support for gaming drivers, lower memory bandwidth and reduced frame buffer size, as well as a lower clocked central unit. The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator, or GMA, is Intel's current line of integrated graphics processors built into various motherboard chipsets.
These integrated graphics products allow a computer to be built without a separate graphics card, which can reduce cost, power consumption and noise. They are commonly found on low-priced notebook and desktop computers as well as business computers, which do not need high levels of graphics capability. 90% of all PCs sold have integrated graphics. They rely on the computer's main memory for storage, which imposes a performance penalty, as both the CPU and GPU have to access memory over the same bus.
