In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) are massively better than the AMD Radeon R5 230 Asus Silent 2GB Edition.

The HD 8740 has a 150 MHz higher core clock speed and 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the R5 230. This results in the HD 8740 providing 20.4 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 8740 has a 150 MHz higher core clock speed and 12 more Render Output Units than the R5 230. This results in the HD 8740 providing 10.2 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The R5 230 was released less than a year after the HD 8740, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The Radeon R5 230 Asus Silent 2GB Edition and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The HD 8740 has 62.4 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the R5 230, which means that the memory performance of the HD 8740 is much better than the R5 230.

The Radeon R5 230 Asus Silent 2GB Edition has 160 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) has 512. However, the actual shader performance of the R5 230 is 52 and the actual shader performance of the HD 8740 is 348. The HD 8740 having 296 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 8740 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the R5 230.

The HD 8740 transistor size technology is 12 nm (nanometers) smaller than the R5 230. This means that the HD 8740 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the R5 230.

The Radeon R5 230 Asus Silent 2GB Edition requires 19 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the R5 230 and a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740. The HD 8740 requires 36 Watts more than the R5 230 to run. The difference is significant enough that the HD 8740 may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the R5 230.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon R5 230 Asus Silent 2GB Edition is a special edition of the entry-level Radeon R5 230.
Among other features, it comes with a Silent Passive Cooling System which produces no noise and comes overclocked out of the box in the central unit which was increased from 625MHz to 650MHz and in the operating memory clock which went from 533MHz to 600MHz.
Furthermore, the frame buffer was doubled to 2GB though this will not boost its performance and can be addressed as a gimmick - marketing to lure consumers into paying more for the same product.
Expect a 3% performance boost over the reference card in some games and under certain circumstances.
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
