In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB SLI are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM).

The HD 8740 has a 150 MHz higher core clock speed than the 8800 GTS, but the 8800 GTS has 96 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 8740. As a result, the 8800 GTS exhibits a 57.6 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the HD 8740. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 8740 has a 150 MHz higher core clock speed than the 8800 GTS, but the 8800 GTS has 16 more Render Output Units than the HD 8740. As a result, the 8800 GTS exhibits a 8 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the HD 8740. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 8740 was released over three years more recently than the 8800 GTS, and so the HD 8740 is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the 8800 GTS when running the latest games.

The HD 8740 has 1024 MB more video memory than the 8800 GTS, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 8740 also has superior memory performance overall.

The 8800 GTS has 30.4 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 8740, which means that the memory performance of the 8800 GTS is noticeably better than the HD 8740.

The GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB SLI has 256 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) has 512. However, the actual shader performance of the 8800 GTS is 166 and the actual shader performance of the HD 8740 is 348. The HD 8740 having 182 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the 8800 GTS performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The HD 8740 transistor size technology is 37 nm (nanometers) smaller than the 8800 GTS. This means that the HD 8740 is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the 8800 GTS. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the HD 8740 should consume less power than the 8800 GTS.

The GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB SLI requires 270 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 650 Watts for the 8800 GTS and a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740. The 8800 GTS requires 215 Watts more than the HD 8740 to run. The difference is significant enough that the 8800 GTS may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 8740.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewThe SLI configuration of GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB.Overview
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Performance
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
