In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB SLI are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM).

The HD 8740 has a 150 MHz higher core clock speed than the 8800 GTS, but the 8800 GTS has 96 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 8740. As a result, the 8800 GTS exhibits a 57.6 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the HD 8740. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 8740 has a 150 MHz higher core clock speed than the 8800 GTS, but the 8800 GTS has 16 more Render Output Units than the HD 8740. This means that the HD 8740 is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the 8800 GTS. Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.
