In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon R9 M270X are noticeably better than the Nvidia GeForce 840M 2GB.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 304 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon R9 M270X, but the Radeon R9 M270X has 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the GeForce 840M 2GB. As a result, the Radeon R9 M270X exhibits a 10.1 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GeForce 840M 2GB. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 304 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon R9 M270X, but the Radeon R9 M270X has 8 more Render Output Units than the GeForce 840M 2GB. As a result, the Radeon R9 M270X exhibits a 3.4 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GeForce 840M 2GB. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The Radeon R9 M270X was released less than a year after the GeForce 840M 2GB, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The Radeon R9 M270X and the GeForce 840M 2GB have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The Radeon R9 M270X has 48 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce 840M 2GB, which means that the memory performance of the Radeon R9 M270X is noticeably better than the GeForce 840M 2GB.

The Radeon R9 M270X has 640 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 840M 2GB has 384. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon R9 M270X is 496 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 840M 2GB is 583. The GeForce 840M 2GB having 87 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the Radeon R9 M270X performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The Radeon R9 M270X requires 50 Watts to run and the GeForce 840M 2GB requires 33 Watts. The Radeon R9 M270X requires 17 Watts more than the GeForce 840M 2GB to run. The difference is not significant enough for the Radeon R9 M270X to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GeForce 840M 2GB.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon R9 M270X is an upcoming high-end mobile graphics Card, based on the 28nm GCN architecture.
Radeon R9 M270X offers a GPU codenamed Venus xT which is at essence a mobile version of the Cape Verde XT GPU. Thus, it offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs, on a 128-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5.
The central unit runs at 725MHz and goes up to 775MHz, in Turbo Mode, while the memory clock operates at 1000MHz. Expect a rated board TDP of 60W.
Its performance is therefore positioned between Radeon 7750 and Radeon 7770 and thus the card is not suited for 1080p gaming but it needs to be paired with at least 8GB of RAM and a considerably powerful Dual-Core processor.
Overview
GeForce 840M 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Maxwell architecture features many improvements and among them is the extremely large L2 Cache which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM108 which has 3 SM activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1029MHz and goes up to 1124MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The Frame Buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1001MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.2 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 33W, it will only be equipped in average sized notebooks.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 20% faster than the older GeForce GT 740M. Therefore, it should match GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce 840M 2GB.
