In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon R9 280 Asus DirectCU II TOP 3GB Edition are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 8950 (OEM).

The R9 280 has a 24 MHz higher core clock speed and the same number of Texture Mapping Units as the HD 8950. This results in the R9 280 providing 2.7 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The R9 280 has a 24 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 8950 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the R9 280 providing 0.8 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The R9 280 was released over a year more recently than the HD 8950, and so the R9 280 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD 8950.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The Radeon R9 280 Asus DirectCU II TOP 3GB Edition and the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The R9 280 has 9.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 8950, which means that the memory performance of the R9 280 is marginally better than the HD 8950.

Both the Radeon R9 280 Asus DirectCU II TOP 3GB Edition and the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) have 1792 Shader Processing Units. While the two GPUs have the same number of SPUs, the actual performance delivered by the HD 8950 is 1658 and by the R9 280 is 1658. Knowing that the shader performance of the HD 8950 is superior, it is not necessary to examine the GPUs' respective Texture and Pixel Fill Rates.

The Radeon R9 280 Asus DirectCU II TOP 3GB Edition requires 200 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) requires 200 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the R9 280 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 8950. The two GPUs require the same amount of wattage to run. As such, there is no need to worry about which will more significantly affect your yearly electricity bills.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon R9 280 Asus DirectCU II TOP 3GB Edition is a special edition of the high-end Radeon R9 280.
This edition comes with a custom cooling system, which reduces the card's temperature under load significantly and comes overclocked out of the box in the central unit that was increased from 827MHz to 874MHz, while the Boost clock is now of 980MHz. Furthermore, the operating memory clock was increased to 1300MHz.
Benchmarks indicate a 5% performance boost over the standard edition and so this edition is more powerful than GeForce GTX 760.
Overview
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is an OEM Only, High-End Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.1 revision of the Graphics Core Next Architecture adds new important technologies and is largely oriented for energy efficiency. New technologies such as PowerTune and TrueAudio are the biggest additions as well as DirectX 11.2 support.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Tahiti PRO2 which has 28 Compute Units activated and thus offers 1792 Shader Processing Units, 112 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 850MHz and goes up to 925MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 3GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 384-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The Memory Clock Operates at 1250MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 200W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with two available 6-pin connectors.

Performance
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7950 Boost Edition and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8950 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a Strong Processor (Intel Core i5 Quad Core/AMD FX Six Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
