In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 820M 1GB are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT.

The GeForce 820M 1GB was released over three years more recently than the GeForce 9800M GT, and so the GeForce 820M 1GB is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the GeForce 9800M GT when running the latest games.

The GeForce 820M 1GB has 512 MB more video memory than the GeForce 9800M GT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, the overall memory performance is about the same.

The GeForce 9800M GT has 36.8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce 820M 1GB, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce 9800M GT is noticeably better than the GeForce 820M 1GB.

Both the GeForce 820M 1GB and the GeForce 9800M GT have 96 Shader Processing Units. While the two GPUs have the same number of SPUs, the actual performance delivered by the GeForce 820M 1GB is 183 and by the GeForce 9800M GT is 120. Knowing that the shader performance of the GeForce 820M 1GB is superior, it is not necessary to examine the GPUs' respective Texture and Pixel Fill Rates.

The GeForce 820M 1GB transistor size technology is 37 nm (nanometers) smaller than the GeForce 9800M GT. This means that the GeForce 820M 1GB is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the GeForce 9800M GT.

The GeForce 820M 1GB requires 15 Watts to run and the GeForce 9800M GT requires 65 Watts. The GeForce 9800M GT requires 50 Watts more than the GeForce 820M 1GB to run. The difference is significant enough that the GeForce 9800M GT may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GeForce 820M 1GB.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce 820M 1GB is a entry-level Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Fermi Architecture.

Architecture
The Fermi Architecture is manufactured with a 40nm Technology and uses a technique known as Hot Clocking: The Shaders are clocked twice as fast as the Central Unit. While this leads to a reasonable performance boost, it causes enormous amounts of energy dissipation, leading, ultimately, to a significantly higher operating temperature.
Fermi is also the first GPU architecture with fully cached memory access which increases memory performance.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed GF117-N15V-GM which has 2 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 96 Shader Processing Units, 16 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The Central Unit is initially clocked at 625MHz and may reach up to 955MHz, in Turbo Mode.
Additionally, GF117 is built using a 28nm technology.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and no way benefits the GPU. The Memory Clock Operates at 900MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Optimus, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX, Realtime Raytracing and other technologies

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 15W, it is suited for average sized laptops.

Performance
GeForce 820M 1GB is essentially a fast GeForce GT 720M.
Gaming benchmarks indicate its performance is slightly above the older GeForce GT 720M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i3 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a system with GeForce 820M 1GB.
NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GT GPUs deliver optimized performance for immersive gaming on-the-go. Powering the next generation of visual computing, blazing-fast mobile gaming, and the ultimate HD experience with PureVideo HD technology. This product is also enabled for CUDA applications and is NVIDIA PhysX-ready.
