In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M are very slightly better than the Nvidia Quadro FX 3700M.

The GeForce GTX 280M was released less than a year after the Quadro FX 3700M, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The GeForce GTX 280M and the Quadro FX 3700M have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The GeForce GTX 280M has 9.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Quadro FX 3700M, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce GTX 280M is marginally better than the Quadro FX 3700M.

Both the GeForce GTX 280M and the Quadro FX 3700M have 128 Shader Processing Units. While the two GPUs have the same number of SPUs, the actual performance delivered by the GeForce GTX 280M is 187 and by the Quadro FX 3700M is 70. Knowing that the shader performance of the GeForce GTX 280M is superior, it is not necessary to examine the GPUs' respective Texture and Pixel Fill Rates.

The GeForce GTX 280M transistor size technology is 10 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Quadro FX 3700M. This means that the GeForce GTX 280M is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Quadro FX 3700M. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the GeForce GTX 280M should consume less power than the Quadro FX 3700M.

The GeForce GTX 280M requires 75 Watts to run and the Quadro FX 3700M requires 75 Watts. The two GPUs require the same amount of wattage to run. As such, there is no need to worry about which will more significantly affect your yearly electricity bills.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewGeForce GTX 280M is the second most powerful GPU of the 200M Series released by NVIDIA in 2009/2010. The biggest hindrance it has is the fact that it only supports DirectX up to 10 so DirectX 11 games aren't supported.
It uses the 'G92b' architecture, similar to the one 9800M GTX has but was manufactured at 55nm, instead of 65nm. It also features extra Pipelines as well as increases core frequencies so the performance is much better but still nothing like its desktop version - GeForce GTX 280. It's technically a slower GeForce GTX 285M.
Compared to powerful Mobile GPUS (e.g. GTX 485M, Radeon HD 6990M), GeForce GTX 280M is not far behind and it's capable of playing demanding games (like Crysis 2) at high settings. However, very demanding games like Metro 2033 can only be played at medium settings.
The Quadro® FX 3700M high-end mobile workstation graphics solution with its revolutionary unified architecture, delivers 1 GB memory, excellent image quality, and optimized visual computing application performance pushing the limits of a 17" mobile workstation. The reference standard for OpenGL 2.1, DirectX 10, and Shader Model 4.0, Quadro FX 3700M enables next generation applications with new levels of interactivity to meet the demands of CAD engineers, graphics designers, and other technical design professionals.
