In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia Quadro FX 5600 are noticeably better than the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS 512MB.

The Quadro FX 5600 was released less than a year after the 8600 GTS, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The Quadro FX 5600 has 1024 MB more video memory than the 8600 GTS, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the Quadro FX 5600 also has superior memory performance overall.

The Quadro FX 5600 has 44.8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the 8600 GTS, which means that the memory performance of the Quadro FX 5600 is noticeably better than the 8600 GTS.

The Quadro FX 5600 has 128 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 8600 GTS 512MB has 32. However, the actual shader performance of the Quadro FX 5600 is 77 and the actual shader performance of the 8600 GTS is 54. The Quadro FX 5600 having 23 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Quadro FX 5600 delivers a noticeably smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the 8600 GTS.

The 8600 GTS transistor size technology is 10 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Quadro FX 5600. This means that the 8600 GTS is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Quadro FX 5600.

The Quadro FX 5600 requires 171 Watts to run and the GeForce 8600 GTS 512MB requires 75 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 750 Watts for the Quadro FX 5600 and a PSU with at least 350 Watts for the 8600 GTS. The Quadro FX 5600 requires 96 Watts more than the 8600 GTS to run. The difference is significant enough that the Quadro FX 5600 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the 8600 GTS.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewA revolutionary unified architecture, NVIDIA Quadro® FX 5600 and 4600 graphics boards deliver optimized application performance. Combining the industry's most advanced feature set, including largest frame buffers, with a C programming environment, Quadro solutions solve the most complex problems. The reference standard for Shader Model 4.0, Quadro FX 5600 and 4600 enables next generation applications with unprecedented image quality. GeForce 8600 GTS is a fast-middle-class GFX based on the 80nm variant of the first-shader unified architecture.
It's based on the G84 Core and offers 32 Shader Processing Units, 16 TMUs and 8 ROPs, on a 128-bit memory interface of GDDR3. The central unit runs at 675MHz and the memory clock operates 1000MHz. It will consume no more than 75 Watt.
It's therefore a further clocked GeForce 8600 GT and should be significantly faster.
This GPU is only suited for a 1024x768 (or less) resolution. Today's games will run at medium settings although extremely demanding games might not run at all. DirectX 11 based games aren't supported and its performance will decrease drastically, as the resolution increases.
