In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 840M 2GB are marginally better than the AMD Radeon HD 8650G + HD 8670M Dual.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 309 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 8650G, but the HD 8650G has 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the GeForce 840M 2GB. As a result, the HD 8650G exhibits a 9.9 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GeForce 840M 2GB. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 309 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 8650G, but the HD 8650G has 8 more Render Output Units than the GeForce 840M 2GB. As a result, the HD 8650G exhibits a 3.3 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GeForce 840M 2GB. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GeForce 840M 2GB was released less than a year after the HD 8650G, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has 2048 MB video memory, but the HD 8650G does not have an entry, so the two GPUs cannot be reliably compared in this area.

The Radeon HD 8650G + HD 8670M Dual has 768 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 840M 2GB has 384. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 8650G is 595 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 840M 2GB is 583. The HD 8650G having 12 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 8650G delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce 840M 2GB.

The GeForce 840M 2GB transistor size technology is 4 nm (nanometers) smaller than the HD 8650G. This means that the GeForce 840M 2GB is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the HD 8650G. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the GeForce 840M 2GB should consume less power than the HD 8650G.

The Radeon HD 8650G + HD 8670M Dual requires 50 Watts to run and the GeForce 840M 2GB requires 33 Watts. The HD 8650G requires 17 Watts more than the GeForce 840M 2GB to run. The difference is not significant enough for the HD 8650G to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GeForce 840M 2GB.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon HD 8650G + HD 8670M Dual is a combination of a Radeon 8650G (integrated graphics) with a Radeon HD 8670M (dedicated).
This combination is called Asymmetric CrossFire and can also lead to Micro Stuttering.
Unfortunately, benchmarks indicate the performance is,at times, worse than a single Radeon HD 8670M performing by itself. This is due to poor driver support.
However, on some games the performance did exceed a dedicated GeForce GT 740M.
GeForce 840M 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

The Maxwell architecture features many improvements and among them is the extremely large L2 Cache which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

It equips a GPU codenamed GM108 which has 3 SM activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1029MHz and goes up to 1124MHz, in Turbo Mode.

The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The Frame Buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1001MHz.

DirectX 11.2 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 33W, it will only be equipped in average sized notebooks.

Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 20% faster than the older GeForce GT 740M. Therefore, it should match GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce 840M 2GB.
