In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7850M are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce 840M 2GB.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 354 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon HD 7850M, but the Radeon HD 7850M has 16 more Texture Mapping Units than the GeForce 840M 2GB. As a result, the Radeon HD 7850M exhibits a 2.3 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GeForce 840M 2GB. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 354 MHz higher core clock speed than the Radeon HD 7850M, but the Radeon HD 7850M has 8 more Render Output Units than the GeForce 840M 2GB. As a result, the Radeon HD 7850M exhibits a 2.6 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GeForce 840M 2GB. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GeForce 840M 2GB was released over a year more recently than the Radeon HD 7850M, and so the GeForce 840M 2GB is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the Radeon HD 7850M.

The GeForce 840M 2GB and the Radeon HD 7850M have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The Radeon HD 7850M has 48 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GeForce 840M 2GB, which means that the memory performance of the Radeon HD 7850M is noticeably better than the GeForce 840M 2GB.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has 384 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 7850M has 640. However, the actual shader performance of the GeForce 840M 2GB is 583 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 7850M is 367. The GeForce 840M 2GB having 216 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the Radeon HD 7850M performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The GeForce 840M 2GB requires 33 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 7850M requires 40 Watts. The Radeon HD 7850M requires 7 Watts more than the GeForce 840M 2GB to run. The difference is not significant enough for the Radeon HD 7850M to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the GeForce 840M 2GB.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce 840M 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Maxwell architecture features many improvements and among them is the extremely large L2 Cache which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM108 which has 3 SM activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1029MHz and goes up to 1124MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The Frame Buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1001MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.2 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 33W, it will only be equipped in average sized notebooks.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 20% faster than the older GeForce GT 740M. Therefore, it should match GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce 840M 2GB.
Overview
Radeon HD 7850M is a Performance Mobile Graphics Card based on the First revision of the GCN Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Heathrow Pro which has 10 Compute Units activated and thus offers 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit Operates at 675MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 128-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1000MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Crossfire, PowerTune Technology, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, HD3D, ZeroCore Power and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 40W, it is suited for 17" or larger laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its on average with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 660M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 8GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7850M.
