In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 840M 2GB are massively better than the AMD Radeon HD 7450M.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 329 MHz higher core clock speed and 16 more Texture Mapping Units than the Radeon HD 7450M. This results in the GeForce 840M 2GB providing 19.1 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has a 329 MHz higher core clock speed and 4 more Render Output Units than the Radeon HD 7450M. This results in the GeForce 840M 2GB providing 5.4 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GeForce 840M 2GB was released over a year more recently than the Radeon HD 7450M, and so the GeForce 840M 2GB is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the Radeon HD 7450M.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has 1024 MB more video memory than the Radeon HD 7450M, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GeForce 840M 2GB also has superior memory performance overall.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has 1.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 7450M, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce 840M 2GB is marginally better than the Radeon HD 7450M.

The GeForce 840M 2GB has 384 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 7450M has 160. However, the actual shader performance of the GeForce 840M 2GB is 583 and the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 7450M is 56. The GeForce 840M 2GB having 527 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GeForce 840M 2GB delivers a noticeably smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the Radeon HD 7450M.

The GeForce 840M 2GB transistor size technology is 12 nm (nanometers) smaller than the Radeon HD 7450M. This means that the GeForce 840M 2GB is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the Radeon HD 7450M.

The GeForce 840M 2GB requires 33 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 7450M requires 7 Watts. The GeForce 840M 2GB requires 26 Watts more than the Radeon HD 7450M to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GeForce 840M 2GB to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the Radeon HD 7450M.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce 840M 2GB is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Maxwell architecture.

Architecture
The Maxwell architecture features many improvements and among them is the extremely large L2 Cache which allows NVIDIA to produce Graphics Cards with relatively small memory data transfer rates, without causing too much impact on the overall performance. Furthermore, the Shaders have been redesigned and are both more powerful and energy efficient.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed GM108 which has 3 SM activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 24 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The central unit runs at 1029MHz and goes up to 1124MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The Frame Buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The memory clock operates at 1001MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.2 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for GPU Boost 2.0, GeForce Experience, PhysX and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 33W, it will only be equipped in average sized notebooks.

Performance
Benchmarks indicate its performance is over 20% faster than the older GeForce GT 740M. Therefore, it should match GeForce GT 750M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i5 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a notebook with GeForce 840M 2GB.
Overview
Radeon HD 7450M is an Entry-Level Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Terascale Architecture.

Architecture
The Second variant of the Terascale 2 Architecture is still manufactured with a 40nm technology and despite allowing more Stream Cores, their design remains more or less the same compared to the first variant.

GPU
It equips a GPU codenamed Seymour PRO which has 2 Compute Units activated and thus offers 160 Shader Processing Units, 8 TMUs and 4 ROPs. The Central Unit runs at 700MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The memory clock operates at 900MHz.

Features
DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for HD3D, Eyefinity, App Acceleration, PowerPlay and other technologies.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 7W, it is suited for smaller laptops.

Performance
Gaming benchmarks put its performance somewhat above a GeForce GT 520M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a Budget Processor (Intel Celeron Mobile and 4GB of RAM for a system with Radeon HD 7450M.
