In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon R7 260X Sapphire 2GB OC Edition are significantly better than the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM).

The R7 260X has a 350 MHz higher core clock speed and 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 8740. This results in the R7 260X providing 38.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The R7 260X has a 350 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 8740 and the same number of Render Output Units. This results in the R7 260X providing 5.6 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The R7 260X was released less than a year after the HD 8740, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The Radeon R7 260X Sapphire 2GB OC Edition and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The R7 260X has 33.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 8740, which means that the memory performance of the R7 260X is noticeably better than the HD 8740.

The Radeon R7 260X Sapphire 2GB OC Edition has 896 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) has 512. However, the actual shader performance of the R7 260X is 876 and the actual shader performance of the HD 8740 is 348. The R7 260X having 528 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the R7 260X delivers a significantly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 8740.

The Radeon R7 260X Sapphire 2GB OC Edition requires 120 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the R7 260X and a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740. The R7 260X requires 65 Watts more than the HD 8740 to run. The difference is significant enough that the R7 260X may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 8740.

Overview
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Performance
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
