In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8860 (OEM) are significantly better than the AMD Radeon HD 6870 PowerColor 1GB Edition.

The HD 8860 and the HD 6870 have the same core clock speed of 900 MHz, but the HD 8860 has 24 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 6870. As a result, the HD 8860 exhibits a 21.6 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the HD 6870. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 8860 and the HD 6870 have both the same core clock speed and the same Pixel Fill Rate. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 8860 was released over a year more recently than the HD 6870, and so the HD 8860 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD 6870.

The HD 8860 has 1024 MB more video memory than the HD 6870, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 8860 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 8860 has 44.8 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 6870, which means that the memory performance of the HD 8860 is noticeably better than the HD 6870.

The Radeon HD 8860 (OEM) has 1280 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 6870 PowerColor 1GB Edition has 1120. However, the actual shader performance of the HD 8860 is 1006 and the actual shader performance of the HD 6870 is 504. The HD 8860 having 502 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 8860 delivers a significantly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 6870.

The HD 8860 transistor size technology is 12 nm (nanometers) smaller than the HD 6870. This means that the HD 8860 is expected to run slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the HD 6870.

The Radeon HD 8860 (OEM) requires 150 Watts to run but there is no entry for the Radeon HD 6870 PowerColor 1GB Edition. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 8860 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 6870. The two GPUs have been recommended a PSU with the same amount of wattage. As such, there is no need to worry about which will more significantly affect your yearly electricity bills.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
Radeon HD 8860 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Performance Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN 1.1 revision of the Graphics Core Next Architecture adds new important technologies and is largely oriented for energy efficiency. New technologies such as PowerTune and TrueAudio are the biggest additions as well as DirectX 11.2 support.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Curacao PRO which has 20 Compute Units activated and thus offers 1280 Shader Processing Units, 80 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 900MHz and goes up to 925MHz, in Turbo Mode.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1400MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 150W, it requires at least a 500W PSU with one available 6-pin connector.

Performance
Radeon HD 8860 (OEM) is essentially a Power Optimized Radeon HD 7870/Radeon HD 8870 (OEM).
It proves to be as fast as Radeon HD 7870/Radeon HD 8870 (OEM) .

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8860 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a Strong Processor (Intel Core i5 Quad Core/AMD FX Six Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
Radeon HD 6870 PowerColor 1GB Edition is a special edition of the high-end Radeon HD 6870. See its page for more information about it.
It has no new features and so it can be addressed as a renamed Radeon HD 6870. Therefore its performance is exactly like the standard's.
