In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GT 740M 64-bit Edition are marginally better than the Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT SLI.

The GT 740M was released over three years more recently than the 9800M GT, and so the GT 740M is likely to have far better driver support, meaning it will be much more optimized and ultimately superior to the 9800M GT when running the latest games.

The GT 740M has 1024 MB more video memory than the 9800M GT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, the overall memory performance is about the same.

The 9800M GT has 88 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GT 740M, which means that the memory performance of the 9800M GT is much better than the GT 740M.

The GeForce GT 740M 64-bit Edition has 384 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 9800M GT SLI has 192. However, the actual shader performance of the GT 740M is 406 and the actual shader performance of the 9800M GT is 96. The GT 740M having 310 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the 9800M GT performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The GT 740M transistor size technology is 37 nm (nanometers) smaller than the 9800M GT. This means that the GT 740M is expected to run much cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the 9800M GT. While they exhibit similar graphical performance, the GT 740M should consume less power than the 9800M GT.

The GeForce GT 740M 64-bit Edition requires 33 Watts to run and the GeForce 9800M GT SLI requires 130 Watts. The 9800M GT requires 97 Watts more than the GT 740M to run. The difference is significant enough that the 9800M GT may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GT 740M.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewOverview
GeForce GT 740M v3 is a Middle-Class Mobile Graphics Card based on the second revision of the Kepler Architecture.

This Graphics Card Equips the Kepler GK208 GPU which is essentially a power optimized version of the GK107 GPU. Whereas it still has a count of 2 Stream Multiprocessors, the bus-width has been cut in half to allow for even a smaller power consumption and consequently a cooler operating temperature.
Additionally, the GK208 GPU allows the Central Unit to reach a significant higher frequency, thanks to the Kepler Boost 2.0 Technology. The better the laptop's cooling system, the higher the frequency.

It equips a GPU Codenamed GK208 which has 2 Stream Multiprocessors activated and thus offers 384 Shader Processing Units, 16 TMUs and 8 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 980MHz and may reach up to 1058MHz.

The GPU accesses a 2GB frame buffer of DDR3, through a 64-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is exaggerated and in no way benefits the GPU. The Memory Clock Operates at 900MHz.

DirectX 11.0 Support (11.0 Hardware Default) and support for Kepler Boost 2.0, Optimus, CUDA, OpenCL, DirectCompute, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX, Realtime Raytracing and other technologies

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 33W, it is suited for small laptops.

GeForce GT 740M v3 is essentially a fast GeForce GT 730M v2.
Gaming benchmarks indicate its performance stands somewhere between GeForce GT 640M & GeForce GT 645M.

System Suggestions
We recommend a modest processor (Intel Core i3 Mobile) and 4GB of RAM for a system with GeForce GT 740M v3.
GeForce 9800M GT SLI is a solution of two GeForce 9800M GT put together using NVIDIA'S SLI technology.
Check the page of GeForce 9800M GT to know more about its chip.
As usual, SLI relies a lot on proper driver support and may suffer from micro-stuttering in lower frame rates (below 30). Benchmarks indicate the performance is overall, up to X% better than a single GeForce 9800M GT performing by itself but at times (depending whether or not the 3D game supports SLI or in the graphics driver) it performed worse than a single GeForce 9800M GT.
A few demanding games will run at the highest settings with fluent frame rates (30+) but overall most games will require reduced settings to be played optimally.
