In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 SLI are significantly better than the AMD Radeon HD 7970 DirectCU II TOP Edition.

The GTX 770 has a 46 MHz higher core clock speed and 128 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 7970. This results in the GTX 770 providing 139.8 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 770 has a 46 MHz higher core clock speed and 32 more Render Output Units than the HD 7970. This results in the GTX 770 providing 34.9 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 770 was released over a year more recently than the HD 7970, and so the GTX 770 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the HD 7970.

Both GPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings.

The GeForce GTX 770 SLI requires 400 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 7970 DirectCU II TOP Edition requires 300 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 750 Watts for the GTX 770. The GTX 770 requires 100 Watts more than the HD 7970 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GTX 770 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 7970.

Mini ReviewGeForce GTX 770 SLI is a combination of 2 GeForce GTX 770 put together using NVIDIA's SLI technology.
Together, this combination offers 3072 Shader Processing Units, 256 TMUs and 64 ROPs. This, on a 256-bit memory interface, per card, of fast GDDR5. While the central unit runs at 1046MHz and goes up to 1085MHz, in Turbo Mode, the memory clock operates at 1752MHz.
Best case scenario, this combination performs better than dual-graphics GeForce GTX 690 but ultimately, its performance depends on the driver support and on the 3D application.
Therefore, and paired with a powerful processor, all demanding games are playable at the highest settings. Still, this combination might surpass the 450W barrier of TDP and so it will require a very powerful PSU.

Changes include a boost in the core-clock from 925MHz to 1000MHz and in the memory clock from 5500GHz to 5600MHz. A new cooling system, called DirectCU II that is 20% cooler and 14dB quieter with exclusive DirectCU II thermal solution, according to Asus is also available.
Benchmarks indicate a 4,5% performance boost when compared to the standard Radeon HD 7970.
Therefore, all games, including very demanding ones, should be fully playable at max settings and with very attractive resolutions.
