In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 3850 AGP are noticeably better than the AMD Radeon HD 4650 Asus Low Profile Edition.

The HD 3850 has a 68 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 4650, but the HD 4650 has 16 more Texture Mapping Units than the HD 3850. As a result, the HD 4650 exhibits a 8.5 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the HD 3850. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 3850 has a 68 MHz higher core clock speed and 8 more Render Output Units than the HD 4650. This results in the HD 3850 providing 5.9 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 4650 was released less than a year after the HD 3850, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The HD 4650 has 512 MB more video memory than the HD 3850, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. However, overall, the HD 3850 has superior memory performance.

The HD 3850 has 40.3 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the HD 4650, which means that the memory performance of the HD 3850 is noticeably better than the HD 4650.

Both the Radeon HD 4650 Asus Low Profile Edition and the Radeon HD 3850 AGP have 320 Shader Processing Units. While the two GPUs have the same number of SPUs, the actual performance delivered by the HD 3850 is 214 and by the HD 4650 is 214. Knowing that the shader performance of the HD 3850 is superior, it is not necessary to examine the GPUs' respective Texture and Pixel Fill Rates.

The Radeon HD 4650 Asus Low Profile Edition requires 48 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 3850 AGP requires 75 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 4650 and a PSU with at least 450 Watts for the HD 3850. The HD 3850 requires 27 Watts more than the HD 4650 to run. The difference is not significant enough for the HD 3850 to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the HD 4650.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon HD 4650 Asus Low Profile Edition is a special edition of the middle-class Radeon HD 4650.
This edition comes optimized for lower noise production but has no overclocking out of the box and so it performs like any other Radeon HD 4650.
Radeon HD 3850 AGP is a variant of the high-end Radeon HD 3850 based on the 55nm, second unified shader architecture, R600. Check its page to know more about its Core.
Compared to Radeon HD 3850, it features twice as much video memory and an AGP 8X Bus Interface. Benchmarks indicate the double sized frame buffer benefits this GPU largely and so its performance is up to 8% better than the reference Radeon HD 3850.
Today's modern games should run fluently at medium settings but with modest resolutions. DirectX 11 games aren't supported.
