In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 470 are noticeably better than the AMD Radeon HD 6850 Sapphire 1GB Edition.

The lower TMU count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the HD 6850 manages to provide 3.2 GTexel/s better texturing performance. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The HD 6850 has a 168 MHz higher core clock speed but 8 fewer Render Output Units than the GeForce GTX 470. The lower ROP count doesn't matter, though, as altogether the HD 6850 manages to provide 0.5 GPixel/s better pixeling performance. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The HD 6850 was released less than a year after the GeForce GTX 470, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The GeForce GTX 470 has 256 MB more video memory than the HD 6850, so is likely to be slightly better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GeForce GTX 470 also has superior memory performance overall.

However, the actual shader performance of the HD 6850 is 372 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce GTX 470 is 544. The GeForce GTX 470 having 172 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GeForce GTX 470 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the HD 6850.

The GeForce GTX 470 requires 215 Watts to run but there is no entry for the HD 6850. We would recommend a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 6850 and a PSU with at least 550 Watts for the GeForce GTX 470. The GeForce GTX 470 has been recommended a PSU with 50 Watts more than the HD 6850. The difference is significant enough that the GeForce GTX 470 may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the HD 6850.

There are no new features that affect Radeon HD 6850 Sapphire 1GB Edition's gaming performance directly and so its performance is exactly like the one the standard Radeon HD 6850 delivers.
GeForce GTX 470 is a high-end GPU based on the 40nm Fermi architecture.
It's based on the Fermi GF100 Core and offers 480 Shader Processing Units, 56 TMUs and 40 ROPs. The central unit runs at 607MHz and the memory clock operates at 837MHz.
Compared to GeForce GTX 480, it delivers considerably worse performance due to the lower SPU count and lower clocked central unit and therefore also lower Shaders speed.
Most modern demanding games will run at the highest settings using a 1080p resolution. However, some will require reduced settings to be played optimally.
