In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra are noticeably better than the AMD Radeon HD 3470.

The Radeon HD 3470 was released over a year more recently than the GeForce 6800 Ultra, and so the Radeon HD 3470 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GeForce 6800 Ultra.

The Radeon HD 3470 and the GeForce 6800 Ultra have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The GeForce 6800 Ultra has 20 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 3470, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce 6800 Ultra is slightly better than the Radeon HD 3470.

The Radeon HD 3470 has 40 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 6800 Ultra has 22. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 3470 is 32 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 6800 Ultra is 9. The Radeon HD 3470 having 23 better shader performance is not particularly notable, as altogether the GeForce 6800 Ultra performs better when taking into account other relevant data.

The Radeon HD 3470 requires 30 Watts to run and the GeForce 6800 Ultra requires 124 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 550 Watts for the Radeon HD 3470. The GeForce 6800 Ultra requires 94 Watts more than the Radeon HD 3470 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GeForce 6800 Ultra may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Radeon HD 3470.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon HD 3470 is a middle-class GPU based on the 55nm, second unified shader architecture, R600.
It's based on the RV620 PRO Core and offers 40 Shader Processing Units, 4 TMUs and 4 ROPs a 64-bit memory interface of standard GDDR3. The central unit runs at 800MHz and the memory clock runs at up to 950MHz.
Compared to Radeon HD 3450, it's significantly faster due to having extra memory bandwidth and only consumes up to 5 more Watt. This is possible due to featuring GDDR3 (which allows higher operating memory clocks and is more energy efficient). The central unit's 200MHz also plays a decisive role between the playable and unplayable.
Only today's modern, forgiving, games can be played at decent settings. DirectX 11 games aren't supported.
The groundbreaking new NVIDIA GeForce 6800 graphics processing units (GPUs) and their revolutionary technologies power worlds where reality and fantasy meet; worlds in which new standards are set for visual realism and quality, performance, and video functionality. The GeForce 6800 GPUs deliver powerful, elegant graphics to drench your senses, immersing you in unparalleled worlds of visual effects for the ultimate PC experience.
