In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) are massively better than the AMD Radeon X1650 XT .

The HD 8740 was released over a year more recently than the X1650 XT, and so the HD 8740 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the X1650 XT.

The HD 8740 has 1792 MB more video memory than the X1650 XT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 8740 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 8740 has 49.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the X1650 XT, which means that the memory performance of the HD 8740 is noticeably better than the X1650 XT.

The Radeon X1650 XT has 24 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) has 512. However, the actual shader performance of the X1650 XT is 8 and the actual shader performance of the HD 8740 is 348. The HD 8740 having 340 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 8740 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the X1650 XT.

The Radeon X1650 XT requires 55 Watts to run and the Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) requires 55 Watts. We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the HD 8740, but we do not have a recommended PSU wattage for the X1650 XT. The two GPUs require the same amount of wattage to run. As such, there is no need to worry about which will more significantly affect your yearly electricity bills.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon X1650 XT is a middle-class GPU based on the 80nm variant of the R500 architecture.
It's based on the RV560 Core and offers 24 Pixel Shaders, 8 TMUs and 8 ROPs, on a 128-bit of standard GDDR3. The central unit runs at 525MHz and the memory clock operates at up to 700MHz.
It's therefore an overclocked Radeon X1650 GT with a 256MB frame buffer and performs much better than all the other X1600/X1650 GPUs.
Some of today's games might be playable at medium settings although the low preset will have to be used on most. As it's not based on a Shader-Unified architecture, both DirectX 10 & 11 games aren't supported.
Overview
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is an OEM Only, Fast-Middle-Class Graphics Card based on the First Revision of the Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture.

Architecture
The GCN Architecture succeeds the 40nm Terascale Architecture. In addition to being produced with a 28nm Technology, the GCN Architecture adds other Technologies that allow for energy efficiency. For example, ZeroCore Power, a long idle power saving technology, allows the Graphics Cards to shut down by itself when the Monitor is turned off.
GCN also adds Improved Anisotropic Filtering, DirectX 11 Tessellation and the Partially Resident Textures (PRT) Technology, which enables future games to utilize ultra-high resolution textures with the same performance as today's small and often repetitive textures.

GPU
It equips a GPU Codenamed Cape Verde PRO which has 8 Compute Units activated and thus offers 512 Shader Processing Units, 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Central Unit is clocked at 800MHz.

Memory
The GPU accesses a 1GB frame buffer of fast GDDR5, through a 256-bit memory interface. The size of the frame buffer is adequate. The Memory Clock Operates at 1125MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 55W, it requires at least a 400W PSU and relies entirely on the PCI Slot for power, meaning no extra connectors are required.

Performance
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is a Direct Rebrand of Radeon HD 7750 and performs exactly like it.

System Suggestions
Radeon HD 8740 (OEM) is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1600x900. We recommend a Decent Processor (Intel Core i3 Quad Core/AMD FX Quad Core) and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.
