In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 3690 are very slightly better than the Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra.

The Radeon HD 3690 was released over a year more recently than the GeForce 6800 Ultra, and so the Radeon HD 3690 is likely to have better driver support, meaning it will be more optimized for running the latest games when compared to the GeForce 6800 Ultra.

The Radeon HD 3690 and the GeForce 6800 Ultra have the same amount of video memory, but are likely to provide slightly different experiences when displaying game textures at high resolutions.

The GeForce 6800 Ultra has 8.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the Radeon HD 3690, which means that the memory performance of the GeForce 6800 Ultra is marginally better than the Radeon HD 3690.

The Radeon HD 3690 has 320 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce 6800 Ultra has 22. However, the actual shader performance of the Radeon HD 3690 is 214 and the actual shader performance of the GeForce 6800 Ultra is 9. The Radeon HD 3690 having 205 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the Radeon HD 3690 delivers a marginally smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GeForce 6800 Ultra.

The Radeon HD 3690 requires 75 Watts to run and the GeForce 6800 Ultra requires 124 Watts. The GeForce 6800 Ultra requires 49 Watts more than the Radeon HD 3690 to run. The difference is significant enough that the GeForce 6800 Ultra may have a slight adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the Radeon HD 3690.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewRadeon HD 3690 (later called Radeon HD 3830) is a fast-middle-class GPU based on the 55nm, second unified shader architecture, R600.
It's based on the RV670 PRO Core and offers 320 Shader Processing Units, 16 TMUs and 16 ROPs a 128-bit memory interface of standard GDDR3. The central unit runs at 670MHz and the memory clock runs at up to 830MHz.
It's therefore related to Radeon HD 3800 Series rather than Radeon HD 3600 Series. It can be addressed as a Radeon HD 3850 with half the memory bandwidth.
Under most circumstances, Radeon HD 3690 is expected to offer exactly the same performance as Radeon HD 3850. DirectX 11 games aren't supported.
The groundbreaking new NVIDIA GeForce 6800 graphics processing units (GPUs) and their revolutionary technologies power worlds where reality and fantasy meet; worlds in which new standards are set for visual realism and quality, performance, and video functionality. The GeForce 6800 GPUs deliver powerful, elegant graphics to drench your senses, immersing you in unparalleled worlds of visual effects for the ultimate PC experience.
