In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB Sapphire Edition are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition.

The GTX 650 has a 250 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 7850, but the HD 7850 has 32 more Texture Mapping Units than the GTX 650. As a result, the HD 7850 exhibits a 19.5 GTexel/s better Texture Fill Rate than the GTX 650. This still holds weight but shader performance is generally more relevant, particularly since both of these GPUs support at least DirectX 10.

The GTX 650 has a 250 MHz higher core clock speed than the HD 7850, but the HD 7850 has 16 more Render Output Units than the GTX 650. As a result, the HD 7850 exhibits a 9.7 GPixel/s better Pixel Fill Rate than the GTX 650. However, both GPUs support DirectX 9 or above, and pixeling performance is only really relevant when comparing older cards.

The GTX 650 was released less than a year after the HD 7850, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The HD 7850 has 1024 MB more video memory than the GTX 650, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the HD 7850 also has superior memory performance overall.

The HD 7850 has 73.6 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the GTX 650, which means that the memory performance of the HD 7850 is much better than the GTX 650.

The GeForce GTX 650 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition has 384 Shader Processing Units and the Radeon HD 7850 2GB Sapphire Edition has 1024. However, the actual shader performance of the GTX 650 is 426 and the actual shader performance of the HD 7850 is 749. The HD 7850 having 323 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the HD 7850 delivers a massively smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the GTX 650.

We would recommend a PSU with at least 400 Watts for the GTX 650 and a PSU with at least 500 Watts for the HD 7850. The HD 7850 has been recommended a PSU with 100 Watts more than the GTX 650. The difference is significant enough that the HD 7850 may have an adverse affect on your yearly electricity bills in comparison to the GTX 650.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewGeForce GTX 650 Gigabyte OC 1GB Edition is a special edition of the fast-middle-class GeForce GTX 650 1GB.
This special edition comes overclocked out of the box to 1110MHz and features a custom-designed 10 cm cooler.
Benchmarks indicate a 4% performance boost when compared to the reference card and so this GPU is suitable for medium to high settings on most demanding games but not with extreme resolutions.
Radeon HD 7850 2GB Sapphire Edition is a special edition of the powerful Radeon HD 7850. See the standard version for more information about it.
This is a reference card with a custom cooling solution, which doesn't affect performance directly. Therefore, its performance is on level with the reference Radeon HD 7850.
