In terms of overall gaming performance, the graphical capabilities of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M SLI are significantly better than the Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT SLI.

The GTX 280M was released less than a year after the 9800M GT, and so they are likely to have similar driver support for optimizing performance when running the latest games.

The GTX 280M has 1024 MB more video memory than the 9800M GT, so is likely to be much better at displaying game textures at higher resolutions. This is supported by the fact that the GTX 280M also has superior memory performance overall.

The GTX 280M has 19.2 GB/sec greater memory bandwidth than the 9800M GT, which means that the memory performance of the GTX 280M is slightly better than the 9800M GT.

The GeForce 9800M GT SLI has 192 Shader Processing Units and the GeForce GTX 280M SLI has 256. However, the actual shader performance of the 9800M GT is 96 and the actual shader performance of the GTX 280M is 150. The GTX 280M having 54 better shader performance and an altogether better performance when taking into account other relevant data means that the GTX 280M delivers a significantly smoother and more efficient experience when processing graphical data than the 9800M GT.

The GTX 280M transistor size technology is 10 nm (nanometers) smaller than the 9800M GT. This means that the GTX 280M is expected to run very slightly cooler and achieve higher clock frequencies than the 9800M GT.

The GeForce 9800M GT SLI requires 130 Watts to run and the GeForce GTX 280M SLI requires 150 Watts. The GTX 280M requires 20 Watts more than the 9800M GT to run. The difference is not significant enough for the GTX 280M to have a noticeably larger impact on your yearly electricity bills than the 9800M GT.

GPU Mini Review

Mini ReviewGeForce 9800M GT SLI is a solution of two GeForce 9800M GT put together using NVIDIA'S SLI technology.
Check the page of GeForce 9800M GT to know more about its chip.
As usual, SLI relies a lot on proper driver support and may suffer from micro-stuttering in lower frame rates (below 30). Benchmarks indicate the performance is overall, up to X% better than a single GeForce 9800M GT performing by itself but at times (depending whether or not the 3D game supports SLI or in the graphics driver) it performed worse than a single GeForce 9800M GT.
A few demanding games will run at the highest settings with fluent frame rates (30+) but overall most games will require reduced settings to be played optimally.
